The European Commission announced today (Tuesday) that the Union has lifted sanctions imposed on three tankers operated by the Japanese company "Mitsui O.S.K. Lines," which were transporting shipments of liquefied natural gas sourced from Russia, after the bloc received commitments to cease such activities.

The European Commission stated on its website: "The three tankers have been removed from the list of sanctioned vessels 'after firm commitments that these LNG carriers will no longer participate in the transportation of Russian energy from the Yamal and Arctic 2 projects, which they were originally serving.' It added: 'This action demonstrates the impact of the EU's targeting of vessels (with sanctions), and that ships can be returned to service after firm commitments.'

The sanctions were imposed on the tankers "North Moon," "North Ocean," and "North Light," which were transporting shipments from the Yamal LNG terminal and participating in ship-to-ship transfers near the port of Murmansk in northern Russia.

This step comes as part of the eighteenth package of sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

The European Union had agreed to impose a new package of sanctions against Russia in light of its war on Ukraine, which includes a price cap on Russian oil, noting that the package is the strongest among the sanctions imposed on Moscow to date.

The UK had imposed new sanctions on Monday targeting what is known as the Russian "shadow fleet," focusing on 135 oil tankers.
