After days of announcing the extinguishing of the fires in Latakia, which lasted for about 12 days, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced today (Saturday) the arrest of a group of remnants of Bashar al-Assad's regime while they were attempting to ignite fires in the countryside of Latakia in the northwest of the country.
The Media and Communication Directorate at the Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that one of the patrols in the area of the forests of the village of Al-Mukhtaria in the countryside of Latakia managed to apprehend a group of Assad regime remnants attempting to start fires in the area, clarifying that the group was transferred to the Internal Security Directorate to continue the investigations and take legal action against them.
Last week, the Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed Al-Saleh, announced the end of the firefighting operations that recently broke out in the mountains of Latakia, warning of serious repercussions that could last for years.
Syrian officials confirmed that the fires destroyed more than 16,000 hectares of forested land, including 2,200 hectares of agricultural land, and affected 45 villages, while the number of affected families reached about 1,200.
On another note, the Deputy Head of the Central Financial Monitoring Authority, Waseem Al-Mansour, revealed the involvement of prominent officials in Bashar al-Assad's regime in financial corruption cases that caused damage to public funds exceeding half a billion dollars, explaining that during the implementation of the Central Financial Monitoring Authority's missions, serious violations were uncovered in some public entities.
He pointed out that investigations proved the involvement of several former officials in abuse of power, receiving bribes, and harming public funds, indicating that among those involved were the former Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, (Q.H), the former Director-General of the General Organization for Chemical Industries, (A.A.F), and the Director of the Electronic Payment Systems Directorate at the Central Bank of Syria, (A.R), without disclosing their full names or specifying the corruption cases they were involved in.
