The Iraqi Ministry of Interior has suspended 17 officials and 3 officers in connection with the fire that engulfed a large shopping center in Wasit province, following preliminary results concluded by the investigation committee that confirmed clear negligence which exacerbated the scale of the disaster and the resulting losses.
Brigadier Mukdad Miri, head of the Relations and Media Department at the Ministry of Interior, stated in a statement today (Saturday) that the high investigation committee formed by order of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani has made significant progress in its work after gathering information and evidence and conducting field matches with the testimonies of witnesses and officials. He said that according to the preliminary investigation results, there was clear negligence on the part of several officials and employees in various departments, which led to the worsening of the disaster and the losses resulting from it.
He confirmed that the committee decided to temporarily suspend 17 employees from work in Wasit/Al-Kut until the investigative and administrative procedures against them are completed, explaining that the committee also decided to suspend 3 officers (the director of the tourism security department, the director of civil defense, and the commander of the first civil defense sector).
Miri clarified that these measures are based on the provisions of the Iraqi Penal Code of 1969 as amended, and the powers granted to the high investigation committee, in order to complete the investigations and hold all negligent parties accountable without exception.
He emphasized that the committee is still continuing its work until the investigations are fully completed, and the final results will be announced transparently to the public as soon as they are finalized, in adherence to the principle of justice and a commitment to hold accountable everyone whose negligence or failure led to this tragedy.
The fire, which broke out in the shopping center in Wasit province last Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of more than 63 people and injuries to more than 50 others.
