A Russian drone has raised fears of the war in Ukraine entering a more dangerous phase after it targeted a Ukrainian train at a station near the Polish border, coinciding with the presence of former CIA Director General David Petraeus on a nearby train, shortly after a train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several European officials and diplomats had departed.
The New York Times reported that Petraeus heard the sound of Russian drones above the train he was on yesterday (Sunday) after it passed through the Ukrainian customs area on its way to Poland, before he was evacuated along with other passengers, followed by a massive explosion.
Former American General Petraeus stated that a Russian drone powered by a jet engine collided with the locomotive of the neighboring train and then exploded.
Petraeus described the attack as "terrifying," considering that there is no military justification for striking a civilian train, indicating that what happened is part of an attempt to "terrorize Ukrainian civilians."
The attack occurred at the Yahodyn station near the Polish border, while a diplomatic train carrying Johnson and national security advisors from EU and NATO countries had left the station shortly before the attack. The Ukrainian state railway company stated that the drone "may have been targeting" the diplomatic train, which departed earlier than scheduled due to urgent changes to the travel timetable in anticipation of Russian strikes.
If it is confirmed that the attack was targeting prominent current and former American, British, and European officials, it would represent a significant Russian escalation, especially since the attack occurred after the officials participated in a security forum in the capital, Kyiv.
This coincides with a Russian escalation against critical infrastructure and Ukrainian railway networks, with Moscow announcing the targeting of trains and military shipments in several regions, while railway facilities have been subjected to simultaneous attacks, in addition to the targeting of a fuel station in Kyiv.
In another development, the Russian Federal Security Service accused Ukrainian forces of using banned toxic materials, including chloropicrin, claiming it found caches containing those materials in the Budyonivsk regions, along with Western-made light weapons. Kyiv has not commented on the Russian accusations.
In contrast, Ukraine has intensified its long-range attacks within Russian territory, targeting oil facilities and warehouses, while the front lines remain largely stable, as the drone and aerial attack war between the two sides expands.
