Two people were killed and six others were injured in an Israeli occupation army shelling of a Catholic complex in Gaza, as confirmed by the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem today (Thursday).
The Latin Patriarchate, which oversees the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza, emphasized the need for this barbaric war to end, asserting that nothing justifies targeting innocent civilians.
The Church of the Holy Family, located in northern Gaza, was subjected to airstrikes this morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to six others, including the church's priest, according to officials from the Catholic Church.
Father Romanelli was very close to the late Pope Francis, and the two often spoke about the war in Gaza. Officials reported that the church was damaged in the attack, which eyewitnesses described as shelling carried out by an Israeli tank.
For his part, Pope Leo expressed his sorrow over the deaths of two individuals, voicing his hope for dialogue and a ceasefire.
In a message of solidarity with the deceased and the injured, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, Pope Leo stated that he "feels profound sadness upon hearing the news of loss of life and injuries due to the military attack." The message added that he "assures the parish priest, Father Gabrayil Romanelli, and all the parishioners of his spiritual closeness."
The Pope renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and expressed his great hope for dialogue, reconciliation, and lasting peace in the region.
For her part, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni held Israel responsible for the attack.
She affirmed that the attacks carried out by Israel on civilian populations for months are unacceptable, stressing that no military action can justify such behavior.
