رغم مرور سنوات على اختفائها وانتشار شائعات حول مقتلها في غارة بطائرة مسيرة، كشفت تحقيقات صحفية أدلة جديدة تشير إلى أن سامانثا لوثويت، المعروفة بلقب «الأرملة البيضاء»، لا تزال على قيد الحياة.
وذكرت التقارير أن سامانثا لوثويت، التي تعود أصولها إلى إيرلندا الشمالية ووُلدت ونشأت لاحقاً في مدينة أيلزبري الإنجليزية، لا تزال نشطة في تمويل ودعم الخلايا الإرهابية. وبحسب صحيفة ذا صن البريطانية، فإن سامانثا ارتبط اسمها بمقتل نحو 400 شخص حول العالم، وذاع صيتها بعد زواجها من جيرماين ليندسي، أحد منفذي تفجيرات لندن في 7 يوليو 2005، التي أودت بحياة 52 شخصاً وأصابت المئات.
ورغم إنكارها معرفتها بنيات زوجها، فإن ارتباطها بعد ذلك بعدة هجمات إرهابية أثار الشكوك حول أقوالها، وغادرت لوثويت المملكة المتحدة عام 2009 متوجهة إلى جنوب أفريقيا، ثم انتقلت إلى تنزانيا عام 2011، قبل أن تستقر في كينيا، لكن تم إدراج اسمها على القائمة الحمراء للإنتربول عام 2013 عقب الهجوم على مركز «ويست غيت» التجاري في نيروبي، الذي أسفر عن مقتل 67 شخصاً.
واتُّهمت لوثويت بتدبير هجمات أخرى، منها هجوم في مومباسا استهدف مشجعين إنجليز خلال بطولة أمم أوروبا 2012، إضافة إلى هجومين قاتلين آخرين في كينيا، وتمكنت سامانثا لوثويت من تفادي القبض عليها رغم مطاردة الأجهزة الأمنية عبر أفريقيا والشرق الأوسط لمدة 15 عاماً، وذلك باستخدام إستراتيجيات متطورة للتملص منها تغيير هوياتها بشكل متكرر، وإخضاع نفسها لعمليات تجميل متعددة، بما في ذلك جراحة لتعديل أنفها، مما أربك السلطات.
واعتمدت لوثويت على وثائق سفر مزورة، وهو ما تجلى بوضوح خلال مداهمة شقتها في مومباسا عام 2011، حيث فرت قبل أن يكتشف المحققون تزوير جواز سفرها.
وذكرت التحقيقات أنها استخدمت وسيلة هروب أخرى وهي رشوة ضباط شرطة كينيين بمبلغ 30 ألف جنيه إسترليني (ما يعادل 5 ملايين شلن كيني) أثناء عمليات تفتيش استهدفتها. وبحسب تقارير حديثة، شوهدت لوثويت في أوغندا العام الماضي، ويُعتقد أنها متمركزة حالياً في الصومال، وتنشط ضمن خلية تابعة لحركة الشباب المرتبطة بتنظيم القاعدة.
وأكدت المصادر أنها تشغل دور «الممولة الرئيسية» لتلك الخلية، وتدير العمليات اللوجستية، وتمسك بزمام التمويل، بعيداً عن الخطوط الأمامية، مبينة أن لوثويت من محبي المغنية بيونسيه، وحبوب الإفطار «ويتابيكس».
تأثرت لوثويت في مراهقتها بتعاليم رجل الدين المتطرف تريفور فورست، الذي زارته في السجن عام 2006، ومن خلاله التقت زوجها الأول جيرماين ليندسي، ولا تزال «الأرملة البيضاء» لغزاً أمنياً يثير قلق الأجهزة الأمنية حول العالم، مع استمرار نشاطها في تمويل ودعم الإرهاب، رغم سنوات من المطاردة ومحاولات القبض عليها.
