The newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" revealed that Hamas will demand the release of several prominent Palestinian leaders imprisoned in Israeli jails as part of the current prisoner exchange deal being negotiated at this time.
According to the newspaper, the list includes prominent figures, foremost among them Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine Ahmad Sa'adat, and Hamas leader Abdullah Barghouti.
If the deal is completed, it could lead to the release of about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including at least 100 serving life sentences.
According to the terms of the ceasefire agreement, in exchange for the release of 10 prisoners and the transfer of the bodies of 18 deceased, Hamas is expected to demand the release of some of the most "sensitive and dangerous" prisoners.
Among the names mentioned in the anticipated deal are Hassan Salameh, sentenced to 46 life sentences for planning operations in which about 100 Israelis were killed; Abbas Al-Sayed, sentenced to 35 life sentences as one of the perpetrators of the Park Hotel attack in 2002; and Ibrahim Hamad, a Hamas leader in the West Bank during the Second Intifada and deputy to Saleh Al-Arouri, who was assassinated in Beirut.
Palestinian sources believe that Hamas is not primarily targeting the release of prisoners but is seeking through this deal to reshape the Palestinian political landscape, especially in the West Bank, as several of those to be released enjoy significant popularity, which could potentially alter the internal dynamics.
A new round of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel began today, Sunday, in Doha, aimed at reaching an agreement on the mechanisms for implementing the new ceasefire and the release of hostages. A Palestinian official familiar with the discussions reported that the negotiating delegation from Hamas, led by Khalil Al-Hayya, along with technical teams, are currently in Doha and ready for serious negotiations.
He noted that the negotiations focus on the mechanisms for implementing the framework agreement for the ceasefire based on the new proposal, pointing out that Hamas wants to emphasize the observations it made in its response to improve the entry of aid in sufficient quantities through United Nations and international organizations, the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, guarantees for a permanent cessation of hostilities, lifting the blockade, and reconstruction.
