ضرب زلزال بلغت قوته 6.1 درجة، اليوم (الأحد)، قبالة سواحل جزر فانواتو في المحيط الهادئ.
وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية بأن الزلزال وقع على عمق 188.1 كيلومترًا، وعلى بُعد 56 كيلومترًا شمال شرقي بورت أولري.
وكان زلزال بقوة 7.4 درجة قد ضرب بورت فيلا، عاصمة فانواتو، في ديسمبر الماضي، ما أسفر عن وفاة 14 شخصًا، وألحق أضرارًا بمبانٍ تجارية وسفارات ومستشفى.
وتقع فانواتو، وهي أرخبيل من الجزر ذات الأصل البركاني، في جنوب المحيط الهادئ، ضمن حزام النار، حيث تلتقي الصفائح التكتونية، ويؤدي احتكاكها وحركتها إلى نشاط زلزالي وبركاني متكرر.
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck today (Sunday) off the coast of Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 188.1 kilometers, and 56 kilometers northeast of Port Olry.
A 7.4 magnitude earthquake had hit Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, last December, resulting in the deaths of 14 people and causing damage to commercial buildings, embassies, and a hospital.
Vanuatu, an archipelago of volcanic origin, is located in the South Pacific within the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet, leading to frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to their friction and movement.
