The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, renewed that the restoration of state authority depends on completing the Taif Agreement and correcting its misapplication, and on restricting weapons to the hands of the state.
The Lebanese news agency reported Salam as saying during a tour in Rashaya today (Sunday) that essential aspects, such as expanded decentralization and balanced development, remain unimplemented, and that without these matters, stability in Lebanon cannot be achieved. Salam emphasized the necessity of restricting weapons to the hands of the state, confirming that there has been a shortcoming since the "Taif Agreement" in addressing this issue.
The Lebanese Prime Minister affirmed that the new regime in Syria presents a historic opportunity for our two countries to rebuild fraternal relations based on non-interference in each other's affairs. He clarified that through his conversation with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, he is "understanding of our conditions in Lebanon and what we suffer from sensitivities and the complexities of the previous phase."
It is noteworthy that in 1989, Lebanese lawmakers reached an agreement in the city of Taif known as the "Taif Agreement," which established new rules for power-sharing among the Lebanese.
The Lebanese Prime Minister revealed months ago the disarmament of more than 500 depots in southern Lebanon, and confirmed that the time has come to build the state, restore sovereignty, and ensure security across all the country's territories.
