A new book reveals disagreements between the two former American presidents, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, stating that the former expressed deep concern about the latter's faltering efforts to be re-elected nearly a year before Election Day, with Obama directly criticizing his former vice president's team, saying: "Your campaign is chaotic."
According to a report published by The Guardian yesterday (Thursday), this stance came amid tensions between the Obama and Biden camps as they prepared for a fierce battle against current President Donald Trump.
The book titled "2024: How Trump Reclaimed the White House and Democrats Lost America," authored by journalists Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf, reveals the extent of the internal conflicts that preceded Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race in favor of his vice president Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump.
The book discusses how Biden, who was trailing in the polls, received complaints from Democratic members of Congress about the lack of campaign presence in their electoral districts, while his team in Wilmington, Delaware, was "frustrated." It quotes Biden telling one of his aides: "I have a problem leading the campaign."
On November 20, 2023, Biden received a call from Obama to congratulate him on his 81st birthday and invited him to lunch at the White House. The book mentions that Obama remained "somewhat skeptical" about Biden's decision to run for a second term.
According to the book, during their lunch meeting in December, Obama expressed his reservations about dividing the campaign management between Wilmington and Washington, considering that this approach was not suitable for the speed of decision-making required in contemporary presidential elections. Obama described his vice president's campaign as "chaotic."
The report stated that Obama was not well-liked within Biden's inner circle, noting that earlier in 2023, Obama recorded videos to support Biden's campaign online, but one of these clips upset some of Biden's aides when Obama said, "I won elections like this before."
As stated in the book, "Despite the significant overlap between the aides of Obama and Biden, Biden loyalists considered Obama arrogant, and that he and his close team did not stop insulting Biden and mistreating him, despite his loyalty to him as vice president."
The authors of the book noted that Biden withdrew from the presidential race after a disastrous performance in a debate, leaving his vice president Harris with only 107 days to run what was considered the shortest presidential campaign in modern history before losing to Trump.
