The Syrian Ministry of Interior launched today (Monday) a precise security operation to track and target hideouts of the terrorist organization "ISIS" in Damascus and its countryside, particularly the hideouts that carried out the terrorist attack on St. Elias Church in the Al-Duwaila neighborhood of the capital, Damascus. According to the ministry's spokesperson, Nour Al-Din Al-Baba, the operation was carried out in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate.
Al-Baba explained that the operation targeted ISIS terrorist hideouts in Damascus and its countryside. Among those targets was "the hideout of the gang that attacked St. Elias Church yesterday," noting that security units intensified their efforts since the attack occurred, gathering information and analyzing evidence within a joint operations room with the General Intelligence.
Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab confirmed that the operation was carried out precisely by security units in Harasta and Kafr Batna, targeting sites of terrorist cells linked to ISIS. He announced the arrest of the cell leader and five members, in addition to the killing of two, one of whom was the main perpetrator involved in facilitating the entry of the suicide bomber into St. Elias Church, while the other was also preparing to carry out a terrorist act in one of the neighborhoods of Damascus.
He pointed out that during the raids, the forces seized quantities of weapons and ammunition, explosive vests, and mines, and found a booby-trapped motorcycle that was prepared for detonation, explaining that "the cowardly terrorist acts will only increase our determination to pursue anyone who tries to tamper with the security of the country."
The Syrian Interior Minister vowed a firm and ongoing response against the hideouts of terrorism.
The Syrian Ministry of Health had announced that the death toll from this terrorist attack had risen to 27, in addition to dozens of injured.
