أقر الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، (الأربعاء)، بأن الولايات المتحدة أجلت مجموعة من موظفيها غير الأساسيين من الشرق الأوسط، وسط تصاعد التوترات في المنطقة.
وقال ترمب للصحفيين لدى وصوله مركز كينيدي في العاصمة واشنطن: «لقد تم نقلهم إلى الخارج.. قد يكون مكاناً خطيراً.. سنرى ما سيحدث»، مضيفاً أن إيران لا تستطيع امتلاك سلاح نووي، وأن الولايات المتحدة لن تسمح لها بذلك.
وذكرت صحيفة «واشنطن بوست»، أن الولايات المتحدة في حالة تأهب قصوى تحسباً لضربة إسرائيلية محتملة ضد إيران، إذ سمحت وزارة الخارجية بإجلاء بعض موظفيها في العراق، فيما منحت وزارة الدفاع «البنتاغون» الضوء الأخضر لمغادرة عائلات العسكريين من قواعد متعددة في الشرق الأوسط.
وأوضحت مصادر أمريكية وعراقية أن الولايات المتحدة تستعد لإخلاء سفارتها في العراق جزئياً، وستسمح لأسر العسكريين بمغادرة مناطق من الشرق الأوسط؛ بسبب تزايد المخاطر الأمنية في المنطقة.وتأتي هذه الإجراءات الأمنية المشددة في وقت تتضاءل فيه آمال ترمب بشأن إمكانية التوصل إلى اتفاق مع إيران يقيّد برنامجها النووي ويمنع اندلاع مواجهة عسكرية كارثية جديدة في المنطقة.
وفي وقت سابق الأربعاء، قال ترمب في تصريح لصحيفة «نيويورك بوست»: «أنا أقل ثقة الآن مما كنت عليه قبل بضعة أشهر. لقد حدث شيء ما لديهم، وأصبحت أقل تفاؤلاً بإمكانية إبرام اتفاق».
U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged on Wednesday that the United States has evacuated a group of non-essential personnel from the Middle East amid rising tensions in the region.
Trump told reporters upon arriving at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.: “They have been moved out… it could be a dangerous place… we’ll see what happens,” adding that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon and that the United States will not allow it to do so.
The Washington Post reported that the United States is on high alert for a potential Israeli strike against Iran, as the State Department has allowed the evacuation of some of its personnel in Iraq, while the Department of Defense (Pentagon) has given the green light for military families to leave multiple bases in the Middle East.
U.S. and Iraqi sources indicated that the United States is preparing for a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq and will allow military families to leave areas in the Middle East due to increasing security risks in the region. These heightened security measures come at a time when Trump's hopes for a potential agreement with Iran that would restrict its nuclear program and prevent a new catastrophic military confrontation in the region are dwindling.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump stated in an interview with the New York Post: “I am less confident now than I was a few months ago. Something has happened with them, and I am less optimistic about the possibility of reaching an agreement.”
