أصيبت مراسلة شبكة Nine News برصاص مطاطي أمام مركز الاحتجاز الفيدرالي في وسط لوس أنجليس، خلال تغطيتها الاحتجاجات التي اندلعت على خلفية مداهمات متعلقة بالهجرة، بعد أن استخدمت الشرطة طلقات غير قاتلة لتفريق المتظاهرين.
وذكرت المراسلة في تقريرها قبل لحظات من إصابتها: «بعد ساعات من التوتر، تدهورت الأوضاع بسرعة، حيث اقتحمت شرطة لوس أنجلوس المكان على صهوة الخيول، مطلقة الرصاص المطاطي لدفع المتظاهرين نحو التراجع في قلب المدينة».
وظهرت توماسي بعد دقائق وهي تصرخ من الألم وتضع يدها على ساقها، فيما صرخ أحد الحاضرين: «لقد أطلقتم النار على الصحافية».
وأكّدت شبكة Nine News التي تعمل بها المراسلة، في بيان، أن توماسي وكاميرا التصوير التابعة لها بخير، مضيفة أن الحادثة تُمثّل «تذكيراً صارخاً بالمخاطر التي يواجهها الصحافيون على خطوط التماس» خلال تغطية الاحتجاجات.
يذكر أن الاحتجاجات اندلعت بعد سلسلة من المداهمات التي نفذتها وكالة الهجرة والجمارك الأمريكية وأسفرت عن اعتقال مئات الأشخاص في مختلف أنحاء ولاية كاليفورنيا.
A reporter for Nine News was hit by rubber bullets outside the federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles while covering the protests that erupted following immigration-related raids, after police used non-lethal rounds to disperse the demonstrators.
The reporter stated in her report just moments before she was injured: "After hours of tension, the situation quickly deteriorated as Los Angeles police stormed the area on horseback, firing rubber bullets to push the protesters back in the heart of the city."
Tomasi was seen minutes later screaming in pain and holding her leg, while one of the attendees shouted, "You shot the journalist."
Nine News, the network for which the reporter works, confirmed in a statement that Tomasi and her camera are fine, adding that the incident serves as "a stark reminder of the dangers journalists face on the front lines" while covering protests.
It is noted that the protests erupted after a series of raids conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that resulted in the arrest of hundreds of people across California.
