After 24 hours from the expiration of the deadline set by the Syrian Ministry of Defense for military groups to join the army, the Syrian authorities began today (Wednesday) a wide-ranging security campaign to collect weapons that are outside the state's control, starting from Daraa province.
The security forces carried out a large-scale security deployment in the city of Jassem in the Daraa countryside, confirming that they have started a major security campaign to collect weapons and pursue wanted individuals, and they have sent massive reinforcements to the area. Security sources announced that the security forces arrested a number of wanted individuals, and that the campaign will continue until its objectives are achieved.
The official Syrian news agency reported that the security campaign aims to collect random weapons and pursue wanted individuals, while Syrian Defense Minister Marhaf Abu Qusra confirmed that there are ongoing efforts to restore the relationship between the army and the Syrian people, pledging that Syria will build an army with a national military doctrine that protects the people.
He told "SANA" that about 130 factions were met to discuss the new structure of the army, emphasizing that no entity will be allowed to remain outside the authority of the ministry.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara stated that the process of rebuilding the country, which has been devastated by 14 years of war, has just begun, calling during his participation in an event in the city of Aleppo titled "Aleppo, the Key to Victory," for Syrians to unite and work together to build the future of the country. During the event, images of fighters who fell in the battle to regain the city, which was the first major city to fall out of the regime's control before it was regained last December, were displayed.
It is noteworthy that the security campaign came after the expiration of the deadline set by the Syrian Ministry of Defense for military groups to join the Syrian army yesterday (Tuesday).
The ministry had pledged decisive measures if any weapons remained outside its control.
It warned that any delay would necessitate taking appropriate measures according to the applicable laws against violators.
The deadline does not include the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as they signed a principles agreement with President Ahmad al-Shara last March to integrate into the Syrian military within a maximum timeframe by the end of this year.
On another note, the European Union Council adopted legal measures that officially endorse the decision to lift economic sanctions on Syria, and added two individuals and three entities to a new list of sanctions related to human rights, in light of events on the Syrian coast. The announcement of the names of the two individuals and the identities of the entities is expected within the next few hours.
The European decision also included the extension of sanctions imposed on economic figures linked to the previous regime, and members of the Assad (former President Bashar al-Assad) and Rami Makhlouf families, as well as members of previous Syrian governments between May 2011 and December 2024.
