بعد توقيفه بتهمة الإرهاب، أعلن وزير الداخلية الفنزويلية ديوسدادو كابيلو اليوم (الخميس)، تسليم أمريكياً لبلاده، خدم بالقوات الجوية الأمريكية وزار أوكرانيا، بعد الاشتباه به في التخطيط لأعمال إرهابية.
ونقلت القناة «VTV» الرسمية عن كابيلو قوله: «تم أمس تسليم مواطن أمريكي جاء إلى فنزويلا لارتكاب أعمال إرهابية، وهو طيار في القوات الجوية الأمريكية، احتجزناه في ولاية زوليا»، مضيفاً: «المعتقل حاول تقديم نسخة كاذبة للمحققين عن خططه في البلاد».
وذكرت السلطات الفنزويلية أن العسكري الأمريكي السابق اعتقل في ولاية زوليا الحدودية في نوفمبر 2024 بعد عبوره حدود كولومبيا، فيما قال المتحدث باسم البيت الأبيض ريتشارد غرينيل إن أحد قدامى المحاربين في القوات الجوية الأمريكية ويدعى سانت كلير عاد إلى وطنه بعد محادثات مع مسؤولين فنزويليين على أرض محايدة.
وكان الرئيس الفنزويلي نيكولاس مادورو غرينيل في كاراكاس قد أعلن في يناير الماضي أنه سيتم تسليم ستة من المواطنين المعتقلين في البلاد بتهم مختلفة إلى الولايات المتحدة.
وشهد البلدان توترات متزايدة العام الماضي بسبب رفض واشنطن الاعتراف بفوز الرئيس مادورو بولاية جديدة، وأعلنت فنزويلا حينها اعتقال رابع مواطن أمريكي منذ تفجير الأزمة الجديدة، بتهمة التآمر ضد نظام رئيس البلاد نيكولاس مادورو، الذي تقول الإدارة الأمريكية إنه خسر الانتخابات الرئاسية الأخيرة، التي اعترفت خلالها واشنطن بمرشح المعارضة غونزاليس أوروتيا على أنه الفائز بالانتخابات الرئاسية.
After being arrested on charges of terrorism, Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced today (Thursday) the handover of an American citizen to his country, who served in the U.S. Air Force and visited Ukraine, after being suspected of planning terrorist activities.
The official channel "VTV" quoted Cabello as saying: "Yesterday, an American citizen who came to Venezuela to commit terrorist acts was handed over. He is a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, and we detained him in Zulia state," adding: "The detainee attempted to provide a false version to investigators about his plans in the country."
The Venezuelan authorities stated that the former American military was arrested in the border state of Zulia in November 2024 after crossing the Colombian border, while White House spokesperson Richard Grenell said that a U.S. Air Force veteran named St. Clair returned to his homeland after talks with Venezuelan officials on neutral ground.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Grenell in Caracas announced last January that six citizens detained in the country on various charges would be handed over to the United States.
The two countries experienced increasing tensions last year due to Washington's refusal to recognize President Maduro's victory in a new term, and Venezuela then announced the arrest of a fourth American citizen since the outbreak of the new crisis, on charges of conspiracy against the regime of President Nicolas Maduro, whom the U.S. administration claims lost the recent presidential elections, during which Washington recognized opposition candidate Gonzales Urrutia as the winner of the presidential elections.
