While Washington has begun taking technical measures to lift sanctions on Syria at Saudi Arabia's request, European Union countries announced today (Tuesday) the lifting of all economic sanctions imposed on Damascus in an attempt to support recovery and reconstruction, according to diplomats.
According to sources, the ambassadors of the 27 member states of the continental bloc reached a preliminary agreement on this matter, and it is expected that foreign ministers will officially announce it later today, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.
The United States has started its work to lift sanctions on Syria after President Donald Trump announced in Riyadh a few days ago, at the request of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Three American officials revealed that the Trump administration has begun technical reviews of the sanctions imposed on Damascus in preparation for their lifting. They explained that the U.S. Treasury Department will issue licenses for Syria until the sanctions are lifted, and they noted that the Trump administration will lift restrictions on Syrian exports to help it build its economy, according to what was reported by CNN.
Syria's Minister of Economy, Nidal al-Shaar, expressed his country's deep appreciation to Saudi Arabia for its significant support in efforts to lift U.S. sanctions, affirming that words of thanks do not do justice to the Kingdom for this pivotal role.
He stated in television remarks that President Donald Trump's announcement in Riyadh to lift the sanctions represents a new beginning for the Syrian economy, emphasizing that this step opens the door to a promising economic phase that enhances opportunities for reconstruction and attracting investments.
He pointed out that the meeting between the Syrian Foreign Minister and his American counterpart Marco Rubio will serve as the cornerstone for the next phase of bilateral relations, contributing to the development of cooperation and closing the chapter on sanctions.
