The newspaper "Haaretz" revealed that 35 Israeli soldiers have committed suicide since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip until the end of 2024, showing a significant increase in the number of suicide cases compared to the last announcement on this matter by the occupation army's radio at the beginning of January 2025.
It quoted military sources as saying that the Israeli army refuses to disclose the number of soldiers who have committed suicide during the current year, but other sources confirmed that 7 soldiers have committed suicide since the beginning of this year due to the ongoing war. It reported that the Israeli army has buried many soldiers since the start of the war due to suicide without military funerals or announcements.
The occupation army's radio announced at the beginning of January 2025 that 28 Israeli soldiers had committed suicide since the start of the war on Gaza, including 16 reservists.
According to sources from the newspaper, the Israeli army recruits reservists suffering from trauma and mental illnesses even while they are undergoing treatment, and it also recruits soldiers who have been discharged from service due to mental health issues.
The newspaper clarified that the occupation army recruits individuals with mental illnesses to fight in the reservist ranks due to a shortage of soldiers, noting that the number of soldiers receiving treatment for mental illnesses since the start of the war exceeds 9,000.
For his part, a military commander disclosed that they are forced to recruit individuals who are not in a normal mental state due to the lack of commitment from Israeli soldiers to fight, emphasizing that they fear scrutinizing the conditions of those suffering from mental illnesses so that the army does not remain without soldiers, as he put it.
He added that thousands of reservists in Gaza have approached the army due to their mental health issues, and they are being recruited despite confirming that their mental conditions are not normal, saying: "We fight with what is available."
The newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" reported last November from the reintegration office of the Israeli Ministry of Defense that about 5,200 soldiers, or 43% of the injured being received at rehabilitation centers, suffer from post-traumatic stress, and it is expected to treat about 100,000 people, at least half of whom suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, by 2030.
According to various estimates in the occupation army, about 15% of the regular fighters who left Gaza and received mental treatment have been unable to return to combat due to the difficulties they face.
