The Russian and Ukrainian negotiators agreed to exchange about 2000 prisoners between them, after a round of talks during which they discussed the possibility of a ceasefire and organizing a meeting between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Russian and Ukrainian delegations held their first direct negotiations between the two sides since the spring of 2022, aiming to reach a solution to the war.

Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky announced that in the coming days, a large number of prisoners will be exchanged, approximately 1000 for 1000. The current round discussed a ceasefire in Ukraine, and Medinsky confirmed that they currently need to "present their visions" for the truce and detail it. The Russian negotiator added in a brief statement that once this vision is presented, they believe it would be appropriate to continue their negotiations.

He stated that he is generally satisfied with the results of the talks and is ready to continue communications with the Ukrainians. Ukrainian delegation head Rustem Umerov confirmed that the Ukrainian side requested direct negotiations between the leaders of the two countries, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, and that Moscow acknowledged this request, discussing the possibility of holding a meeting at the leadership level.

For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan clarified that the Ukrainian and Russian officials agreed in principle to meet again for negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire.

Fidan, who chaired the talks, stated in a post on the "X" platform: "After both sides agreed to exchange a thousand prisoners of war each, the step aims to build trust," adding that they will also exchange their conditions for reaching a ceasefire in writing.
