Axios revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked U.S. President Donald Trump not to lift sanctions on Syria, and reported that Trump did not inform Israel in advance about his decision to hold a meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara.
The site quoted Israeli officials saying: "Netanyahu took advantage of his meeting with Trump at the White House last month and asked him not to lift the sanctions on Syria, expressing his concern about Turkey's role in Syria."
According to the site, Trump did not care about Netanyahu's position, and a source was quoted saying that the Trump administration did not inform Israel in advance about his decision to hold the meeting with the Syrian president or about lifting the sanctions.
The newspaper "Israel Hayom" reported that Netanyahu is preparing for a confrontation with Trump following his statements and positions on several issues. It mentioned that Netanyahu prepared for Trump's tour in the Middle East through diplomatic steps that included intensive consultations with his government ministers and senior defense officials, and he formed a team to confront Trump.
During his visit to Saudi Arabia two days ago, the U.S. President met with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad al-Shara and announced the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria in order to give the Syrian people a chance to grow and develop. He clarified that the decision came after consultations with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The U.S. Treasury Department stated that it is working with the State Department and the National Security Council to implement Trump's directives regarding the lifting of sanctions on Syria.
The sanctions, which were imposed on Syria due to violations by the ousted President Bashar al-Assad's regime, include asset freezes, halting financial transfers, and depriving access to technology.
