The head of Android at Google announced the company's plan to integrate its operating system with ChromeOS, the software currently running on Google's Chromebook laptops.
Samir Samat, the head of Android at Google, said, "We will integrate Chrome OS and Android into a single platform." The official responsible for the Android application on mobile phones, wearable devices, XR, television, and cars expressed interest in how people are using laptops these days, noting that it could add a new area to his portfolio. This comment is as close as it gets to an official confirmation of a change that has been rumored for months. In November 2024, Android Authority reported that Google is transforming ChromeOS into Android, aiming to compete with iPads. This process may have already begun, as Google itself announced last June that ChromeOS will now be developed on large parts of the Android package. Chromebook devices are already capable of running many Android applications.
Meanwhile, the Android operating system is inching closer to ChromeOS with new features including desktop mode, resizable windows, and improved support for external displays. Google's integration of the two operating systems under one roof seems very logical theoretically, allowing it to accelerate feature development and work on improving tablet functionality, as the current operating systems lag behind Apple's iPadOS. However, this has been true for a while - the integration of the two platforms was announced ten years ago in 2015, and experts said it "makes perfect sense to merge them" two years prior to that. This change has been anticipated for a long time, but it means it could take a long time.
