Under the patronage of the Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, the Emir of the Makkah Region, and the honorary president of the Quran Language Endowment, Prince Khalid bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz, the international symposium "The Courage of Arabic: Linguistic and Cognitive Approaches" was launched yesterday (Tuesday) at King Abdulaziz University. This event is organized by the Quran Language Endowment at the university in collaboration with the King Salman Global Center for the Arabic Language, with the participation of a select group of scholars, thinkers, researchers, and interested individuals from within the Kingdom and abroad.
The ceremony began with a speech by the university president and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Quran Language Endowment, Dr. Tareef Youssef Al-Amay, who emphasized that organizing the symposium embodies the Kingdom's care for the Arabic language as a language of cognitive and civilizational identity, a foundation for thought and creativity, and a means of building human awareness. He pointed out that the Arabic language possesses elements of strength, renewal, and the ability to interact with the modern age, describing it as "a language that has the courage to confront and influence; it is not merely a tool for communication, but a vessel of thought, history, and humanity."
Al-Amay clarified that the symposium aims to provide a deep scientific reading of the concept of "The Courage of Arabic" through its specialized axes, which address the Arabic language's ability to adapt to contemporary linguistic transformations, openness to digital education, interaction with the technological revolution and modern lexicography, and its response to the requirements of Arabization, translation, and artificial intelligence technologies, thereby enhancing its global presence and keeping pace with the demands of cognitive development.
The ceremony included a visual presentation showcasing the projects and programs of the Quran Language Endowment, followed by a poem recited by Dr. Mohammed Ali Al-Omari, in which he expressed the status of the Arabic language and the depth of its cultural presence and semantic richness.
Following this, the Secretary-General of the King Salman Global Center for the Arabic Language, Dr. Abdullah Saleh Al-Washmi, delivered a speech in which he affirmed that cooperation with King Abdulaziz University is part of the Center's efforts to enhance initiatives that serve the Arabic language and support its presence in education, scientific research, and the fields of technology and innovation. He pointed out that the Center has provided qualitative programs and initiatives that include building linguistic corpora, developing digital platforms, and launching specialized dictionaries, in addition to national partnerships that contribute to empowering the Arabic language and enhancing its institutional use.
Support for National Initiatives
The ceremony also featured several panel discussions, with the opening session addressing "The Importance of the Arabic Language and Ways to Promote It," attended by several intellectual and scientific leaders, including the Imam and preacher of the Grand Mosque, member of the Council of Senior Scholars, and advisor at the Royal Court, Sheikh Dr. Saleh Abdullah bin Hamid, former Minister of Media Dr. Abdulaziz Khoja, and the former Secretary-General of the King Faisal International Prize, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Sabeel, along with a select group of scholars and researchers. The second session, titled "A Reading in the Construction of the Concept and Its Dimensions," discussed methodologies for studying the concept of the Courage of Arabic and its cognitive and linguistic dimensions.
The opening ceremony concluded with the honoring of participating entities and speakers, with participants emphasizing the importance of supporting national initiatives that concern the Arabic language, empowering it globally, and enhancing its presence in the era of digital transformation.
