The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture revealed to "Okaz" that the installation of scales has begun in several livestock pens as part of the first phase of implementing the decision to sell by weight, and that the installation process is progressing gradually according to an approved plan aimed at fully preparing the market before the mandatory implementation begins.
The ministry confirmed that training programs for sellers are currently being implemented in the locations where the scales have been activated, with plans to gradually extend the training to all pens in conjunction with the completion of the installation; this is to ensure proficiency in using the devices and smooth procedures.
It was noted that the weighing process will be completely free for consumers, with no additional fees imposed, as it is part of the sales service aimed at enhancing transparency and protecting rights.
The ministry indicated that the main goal of implementing sales by weight is to ensure fairness and transparency by knowing the actual weight of livestock, which limits random or exaggerated estimates, serves the interests of consumers, and enhances market oversight. The Ministry of Environment clarified that the most significant incorrect practices that the decision is expected to help reduce include estimating weights by eye inaccurately, price discrepancies due to differing estimates, and taking advantage of the inexperience of some buyers. It emphasized that relying on actual weight contributes to regulating the market and achieving fair and reliable sales.
It is worth mentioning that "Okaz" previously reported in a field report from public benefit markets in Taif that the majority of pens were not complying with the decision to sell by weight, except for one pen, despite six days having passed since the decision was implemented, while some sellers confirmed that they had not received any significant training.
