أعلن الاتحاد الدولي لصون الطبيعة (IUCN) إدراج محمية عروق بني معارض التابعة للمركز الوطني لتنمية الحياة الفطرية، ضمن القائمة الخضراء للمناطق المحمية ذات الإدارة الفعالة والعادلة، التي تضم أكثر من (90) محمية فقط تم اختيارها من بين أكثر من (300) ألف محمية على مستوى العالم.
ويعكس هذا الإدراج نجاح المحمية في تحقيق جميع المعايير والمؤشرات المطلوبة التي تتضمن وجود حوكمة واضحة وفعالة تحقق الشفافية والمساءلة، مع وجود منهجية للتخطيط والإدارة تستند إلى أفضل الممارسات والخبرات العلمية المحلية والعالمية، وهو ما يجسّد جهود المركز للارتقاء بقيمة المحمية البيئية والتنموية والحفاظ على مكوناتها الطبيعية، ونجاح آلياته في إشراك المجتمعات المحلية وتعزيز الإدارة الفعالة والعادلة للمناطق المحمية.
وتُعد معايير القائمة الخضراء من أفضل المنهجيات العالمية لقياس فعالية إدارة المناطق المحمية، وتستند إلى أربع ركائز أساسية تشمل التخطيط الفعّال، ورصد التهديدات والتعامل معها، واستيعاب السياقين الاجتماعي والاقتصادي، والحفاظ على القيم البيئية والتنوع الإحيائي.
وأكد الرئيس التنفيذي للمركز الوطني لتنمية الحياة الفطرية الدكتور محمد قربان أن تسجيل محمية عروق بني معارض في القائمة الخضراء للاتحاد الدولي لحماية الطبيعة يعكس حجم الدعم غير المحدود الذي تقدمه القيادة الرشيدة -أيدها الله- لقطاع البيئة والحياة الفطرية، ويجسد جهود المملكة المستمرة لحماية أنظمتها البيئية الطبيعية، في ظل ما تتميز به من غنى تراثي وتنوع طبيعي في مختلف مناطقها.
وأفاد بأن تسجيل المحمية في القائمة الخضراء يأتي امتدادًا للمنجزات التي حققها المركز محليًا وعالميًا، وهو إنجاز يُبرِز قيمتها العالمية الاستثنائية، ويُبيِّن الالتزام بالحفاظ على الحياة الفطرية وإثراء التنوع الأحيائي وحماية النظم البيئية، والسعي المستمر لتحقيق الهدف 30X30 وهو حماية (30%) من مساحة المملكة البرية والبحرية بحلول العام 2030 بما يحقق أهداف مبادرة السعودية الخضراء والإستراتيجية الوطنية للبيئة التي تعكس طموحات رؤية 2030.
وتقع محمية عروق بني معارض على الحافة الغربية لصحراء الربع الخالي، وتُعد الصحراء الرملية المتصلة الوحيدة في آسيا الاستوائية، وتمتد على مساحة (12,765) كم²وتضم أغنى تنوع أحيائي في الربع الخالي، مع أكثر من (900) نوع من الكائنات الفطرية النباتية والحيوانية من بينها مجموعات من الكائنات الفطرية المهددة بالانقراض مثل المها العربي، والظباء الجبلية والرملية، والقط الرملي، والضبع المخطط، والعديد من الطيور والزواحف.
وكانت المحمية قد سُجّلت في سبتمبر 2023 ضمن قائمة التراث العالمي الطبيعي لمنظمة اليونسكو، بصفتها أول موقع طبيعي على أراضي المملكة، ما يُكرّس موقعها كونها أحد أبرز النماذج البيئية عالميًا.
ويُعد برنامج القائمة الخضراء مبادرة دولية لتكريم المناطق المحمية ذات الإدارة الرشيدة، ويُشرف عليه خبراء مستقلون من الاتحاد الدولي لحماية الطبيعة، بصفته معيارًا علميًا لقياس فاعلية جهود الحماية البيئية حول العالم.
وبهذا الإنجاز تنضم محمية عروق بني معارض إلى كلٍ من محمية الوعول، ومحمية الملك سلمان بن عبدالعزيز الملكية، ومحمية الملك عبدالعزيز، ومحمية شرعان، لتُشكّل معًا نموذجًا وطنيًا متقدمًا في الإدارة البيئية المستدامة، وتعزز مكانة المملكة على خارطة التميّز العالمي في صون الطبيعة.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced the inclusion of the Arouq Bani Ma'arid Reserve, affiliated with the National Center for Wildlife Development, in the Green List of Protected Areas with Effective and Equitable Management, which includes more than (90) reserves selected from over (300) thousand reserves worldwide.
This inclusion reflects the reserve's success in meeting all required standards and indicators, which include having clear and effective governance that ensures transparency and accountability, along with a planning and management methodology based on best practices and local and global scientific expertise. This embodies the center's efforts to enhance the environmental and developmental value of the reserve and preserve its natural components, as well as the success of its mechanisms in engaging local communities and promoting effective and equitable management of protected areas.
The criteria of the Green List are considered among the best global methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of protected area management, based on four main pillars: effective planning, monitoring and addressing threats, understanding social and economic contexts, and preserving environmental values and biodiversity.
The CEO of the National Center for Wildlife Development, Dr. Mohammed Qurban, confirmed that the registration of the Arouq Bani Ma'arid Reserve in the Green List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature reflects the immense support provided by the wise leadership - may God support it - for the environment and wildlife sector, and embodies the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to protect its natural environmental systems, given its rich heritage and natural diversity across various regions.
He stated that the registration of the reserve in the Green List is an extension of the achievements made by the center locally and globally, highlighting its exceptional global value, demonstrating the commitment to preserving wildlife, enriching biodiversity, and protecting ecosystems, and the continuous pursuit of achieving the 30X30 goal, which aims to protect (30%) of the Kingdom's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, in line with the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and the National Environmental Strategy that reflect the aspirations of Vision 2030.
The Arouq Bani Ma'arid Reserve is located on the western edge of the Empty Quarter desert and is the only connected sandy desert in tropical Asia, covering an area of (12,765) km² and containing the richest biodiversity in the Empty Quarter, with over (900) species of wild plants and animals, including groups of endangered species such as the Arabian Oryx, mountain and sand gazelles, the sand cat, the striped hyena, and many birds and reptiles.
The reserve was registered in September 2023 as part of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage List, being the first natural site in the Kingdom, solidifying its position as one of the most prominent environmental models globally.
The Green List program is an international initiative to honor protected areas with sound management, overseen by independent experts from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, serving as a scientific standard for measuring the effectiveness of environmental protection efforts worldwide.
With this achievement, the Arouq Bani Ma'arid Reserve joins the likes of the Oryx Reserve, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve, King Abdulaziz Reserve, and Sharaan Reserve, together forming an advanced national model in sustainable environmental management and enhancing the Kingdom's position on the global map of excellence in nature conservation.
