The volunteer health program for the Hajj season is launching its 17th edition, organized by the Charitable Association for Primary Health Care (Dirham Waqaya) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Health Cluster in Mecca. This season witnesses the acceptance and participation of 650 male and female volunteers from among thousands of applicants representing more than 30 universities.
Dr. Jaser Al-Shahri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Charitable Association for Primary Health Care (Dirham Waqaya), explained that the program is the first of its kind in the field of health volunteering during Hajj, which started 19 years ago. It is the first program dedicated to the care of diabetic foot during Hajj, and volunteers are selected based on their specialties, years of study, volunteer experiences, and previous community participation after passing personal interviews.
Al-Shahri pointed out that the phase following selection involves subjecting the volunteers to a program consisting of three stages. The program offers a promising opportunity to activate and invest in volunteer medical personnel from various health specialties by achieving an advanced field volunteer model; it is specifically designed to align with the nature of the Hajj season and its health statistics that monitor the most common injuries such as heat exhaustion, sunstroke, treatment of diabetic foot injuries, fatigue cases, and others, in addition to monitoring the risk levels in each area of the sacred sites. The program is updated annually.
