The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center implemented a voluntary medical project for heart surgery and catheterization in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, from October 13 to 18, through the "Balsam" Health Training and Development Association.
The voluntary medical project for heart surgery and catheterization successfully performed 28 open-heart surgeries and 84 diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterizations in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
This project is an extension of the various voluntary medical programs carried out by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in several countries to provide treatment for individuals and families with limited income.
The medical team from the "Balsam" Association included 10 volunteers consisting of Saudi doctors, consultants, nurses, technicians, and administrators, and collaborated with 35 local Nigerian staff within the care and operating rooms, as well as in the medical examination of patients at "Nizamiye Hospital" and "Zenith Hospital" in Abuja.
The trip received generous support from the Embassy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, where Ambassador Youssef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi witnessed the field operations, met with the medical team, and offered his support for the efforts of the "Balsam" Association team.
The Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Nigeria welcomed the team at the embassy in the presence of his deputy, Abdulrahman Al-Tuwaim, and the military attaché, Colonel Abdullah bin Saad Al-Ahmari, and hosted a dinner in honor of the team. He also made a direct call to the Nigerian Minister of Health, emphasizing the importance of facilitating the Saudi team's tasks in Nigeria.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Ahmari, the Executive Director of the "Balsam" Health Training and Development Association, stated that the Nigeria trip was not an ordinary journey; it began before the plane took off when the team's flight from Riyadh was delayed and then canceled, followed by the cancellation of the alternative flight from Dammam before reaching it, due to attacks by the terrorist Houthi group on civilian airports. The team had to either retreat or find another way, and they chose the more difficult route: overland via the King Fahd Bridge to Manama, then Doha, and finally Abuja, arriving in the morning and heading directly from the airport to the hospital.
Al-Ahmari also explained that the conditions were not easy in the field; there was one operating room, an intensive care bed shared among multiple specialties, a device malfunctioning mid-operation, and rain delaying progress. Nevertheless, the team completed 84 interventional catheterizations out of the targeted 80 and performed 28 surgical procedures.
The Executive Director of the "Balsam" Association expressed gratitude and appreciation to the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center for serving humanity everywhere and in all relief fields, and to everyone who contributed to the success of this trip, especially the Embassy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Abuja and the Nigerian Ministry of Health. He also specifically thanked the heroes of this trip, including the consultants, technicians, and administrators who carried the message of "Balsam" with dedication.
For its part, the management of "Nizamiye Hospital" in Abuja presented a certificate of thanks and appreciation to the "Balsam" Health Training and Development Association, in recognition of its distinguished contribution to the success of the humanitarian project for heart surgery and catheterization at the hospital. The hospital management praised the remarkable medical expertise of the team, their dedication, and their steadfast commitment to humanitarian work.
The management of "Zenith Hospital" and the Kidney Center in Abuja also issued a certificate of achievement and implementation for the operational plan of the voluntary heart surgery campaign, confirming the completion of all required cases and the execution of the specified operational work plan for the campaign. The medical team distinguished itself with exceptional readiness, precise organization, and the highest standards of professional care, in addition to achieving notable success in performing various heart surgeries at the hospital, including valve replacements, coronary artery bypasses, valve repairs, and other complex procedures.
This campaign continues the Kingdom's approach to supporting voluntary medical activities around the world and contributes to alleviating the suffering of patients and providing high-quality health services in environments lacking advanced capabilities.
