The discovery of a small snake inside the cabin of a passenger plane in Japan led to the cancellation of a flight scheduled from Fukuoka Airport in the southwest of the country, after the airline decided to subject the aircraft to a thorough inspection to ensure the safety of passengers, in a rare incident that drew attention.
The Japan Air Commuter (JAC), a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, announced that a technician found the snake on Monday afternoon while conducting routine checks and preparing the aircraft for the next flight, before it was determined that it was about 40 centimeters long and had been hiding under the carpet inside the cabin.
The staff called in wildlife specialists to handle the situation, where the inspection identified the type of snake, revealing that it was a small Japanese rat snake, which is a non-venomous species that poses no danger to humans. Experts were able to safely capture it.
The plane had arrived at Fukuoka Airport from Izumo Airport in Shimane Prefecture and was scheduled to continue its journey to Kagoshima Prefecture. However, the discovery of the snake shortly before takeoff prompted the airline to cancel the flight and conduct inspections to ensure the aircraft was free of any potential hazards.
The airline has not yet disclosed how the snake managed to get inside the aircraft, confirming that the incident is unprecedented in its aviation history.
The incident recalls rare occurrences experienced by airlines around the world, as unexpected creatures on board planes have become a reason for flight disruptions, amid widespread interest in such incidents that evoke familiar scenes from cinematic films.
