Warnings and Preparations
Various regions, provinces, and centers in Saudi Arabia have experienced rainfall ranging from light to moderate and heavy, accompanied by thunderstorms, causing valleys and streams to flow. The opportunity for more rain still exists, while the city of Arar in the Northern Borders region witnessed continuous rainfall covering various parts of the city.
The National Center of Meteorology had predicted, in its weather report yesterday, moderate to heavy thunderstorms that would lead to flash floods, accompanied by hail showers and active winds stirring up dust and sand, which could result in near-zero horizontal visibility in parts of the Makkah, Madinah, Hail, Qassim, Northern Borders, and northern parts of the Eastern region, as well as parts of Jazan, Asir, and Al-Baha. It also forecasted light to moderate rain in parts of the Tabuk and Al-Jouf regions and the northern parts of Riyadh, without ruling out the formation of fog in parts of those areas. The report addressed surface wind movement, wave height, and the condition of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, warning of sea turbulence with the formation of thunderstorm clouds over parts of both.
The official spokesperson for the National Center of Meteorology, Hussein Mohammed Al-Qahtani, confirmed that the center is monitoring the new rainfall situation that began on Friday, affecting most regions of the Kingdom, and that the impact of this situation is expected to widen and intensify in most areas of the Kingdom on Monday and Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the instructions of the relevant authorities and following the continuous updates on forecasts and alerts issued by the center.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense urged the public to take precautions, remain in safe places, avoid areas where floods and valleys gather, and refrain from swimming in them, while adhering to the instructions announced through various media and social media platforms, in light of the expected thunderstorms across most regions of the Kingdom.
The Saudi Red Crescent Authority in the regions has raised its emergency readiness to deal with the expected weather fluctuations by preparing emergency teams and supporting mechanisms, enhancing its capabilities to respond to reports and emergencies, contributing to the safety of residents and visitors.
The preparations included raising the readiness of medical evacuation centers, basic and advanced emergency teams, rapid intervention teams, and specialized response mechanisms, alongside volunteer emergency teams, as part of comprehensive plans to deal with weather fluctuations, in coordination with relevant authorities, to ensure the provision of emergency services around the clock.
Municipalities and city secretariats have also raised their field readiness in anticipation of rainfall, activated their field plans, and taken necessary measures by deploying teams and equipment, enhancing support centers, coordinating with relevant authorities, and maintaining and cleaning rainwater drainage networks, ensuring the readiness of pumps, equipment, and personnel to guarantee a swift response.
Municipalities have activated awareness messages through their various official channels to educate residents and visitors about safety procedures and support the efforts of the relevant authorities during the rainfall.
