The advisor at the Royal Court and General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, confirmed that Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in addressing food insecurity around the world. This has been achieved by responding to urgent humanitarian needs while investing in more sustainable approaches and solutions. The Kingdom continues to assist many countries in achieving long-term food security by addressing immediate food shortages, as well as implementing programs to build local capacities to increase community food production and improve supply chains. To date, the Kingdom has contributed more than 3.4 billion dollars to 1,289 projects covering 88 countries.
A Matter of Utmost Global Priority
Dr. Al-Rabeeah explained, during his participation in a high-level panel discussion titled: "United to End Hunger: Redirecting Global Action to Address Food Crises in Times of Disturbance," organized jointly by the Federal Republic of Germany, the World Food Programme, and the Global Network Against Food Crises, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York City.
He indicated that conflicts are the main driver of acute food insecurity in many countries; preventing food insecurity must represent an utmost global priority, focusing on systematic prevention and building long-term resilience, rather than just managing short-term crises.
Implementing Comprehensive Measures
Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah stated: "We must implement comprehensive measures to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of aid and to achieve its intended purpose, develop innovative methods for delivering aid aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency, and enhance partnerships to expand and accelerate our humanitarian response. Supply chains must be improved to ensure that aid is delivered more quickly and effectively."
He added: "We must recognize the importance of direct communication with affected communities to understand their perspectives on food security and agriculture; local knowledge and experiences are essential pillars to ensure that our interventions are effective and sustainable," noting that we must consider broad priorities and local contexts when designing our interventions to target everyone, including those working in the fishing, livestock, and beekeeping sectors.
Enhancing the Resilience of Affected Communities
In conclusion, the General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center praised the center's ongoing efforts to combat food insecurity, including support for the "Central Kitchen Project" and food basket projects in the Gaza Strip, as well as the "Seed" initiative that enhances the resilience of affected rural communities and their ability to recover, in addition to the "Rehabilitation of Affected Bakeries" project in Syria, which has supported more than 1.4 million people.
