Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Dubaisi sails with his pen, describing the cultural scene of Medina as a solid cornerstone in the edifice of the national literary and cultural scene, and a living extension of the city's scientific and literary heritage, which originated in the Prophet's Mosque; the ancient scientific and spiritual university that illuminated the horizons of knowledge and enriched the scientific and cultural life across the world with continuous contributions and lasting impact.
The scientific families and houses in Medina took care of this heritage, with each generation carrying its trust and fulfilling its share in serving and enriching knowledge. The city remained, throughout the ages, a center for science, thought, and literature. During the Saudi era, the circles of knowledge expanded, and its scientific and cultural institutions multiplied, diversifying into scientific and literary councils, cultural salons, literary groups, libraries, educational institutions, and research centers.
Medina had known, since early times, scientific and literary councils hosted by some local families, led by scholars, writers, and notable figures. These gatherings were venues for learning and discussion, and meetings for scholars, writers, and seekers of knowledge. Their attendees exchanged knowledge in hadith, jurisprudence, language, and history, and discussed poetry, news, proverbs, and biographies, preserving an important part of the scientific and literary memory of the city, linking the councils of scholars with the homes of literary figures, and connecting study circles with social life.
These councils continued during the Saudi era, with some taking on a more organized form while maintaining their close connection to scientific and social life. They remained venues for reading and discussion, spaces for literary exchange, and resources where writers, scholars, and seekers of knowledge connected with one another.
A solid cornerstone in the scene
Throughout its rich history, Medina encapsulates a rich experience that combines the sanctity of place with profound intellectual contributions. Over the decades and eras, it has remained a scientific and literary beacon radiating knowledge, drawing its leadership from the Prophet's Mosque, weaving through its houses, libraries, institutions, and literary and artistic groups, a renewed cultural scene that preserves heritage while keeping pace with the times.
The Blessed Valley Family
Al-Dubaisi continues: In the year 1371 AH, the "Blessed Valley Family" was established as the first organized literary group in Medina in modern times, bringing together a group of writers and those interested in poetry and literature. Its meetings focused on literary texts across various genres, with a stronger emphasis on poetry, alongside issues of literature and culture. Thus, literary practice transitioned from individual interest and home gatherings to a collective framework with a name, identity, and specific cultural purpose.
The esteemed scholar and writer Dr. Mohammed Al-Eid Al-Khatrani - may he rest in peace - recorded a substantial part of this family's history and news in his valuable book: "The Blessed Valley Family in the Balance," preserving an important page of the literary movement in Medina. The family received the state's blessing during that era, becoming a prominent landmark in the journey of national literature and paving the way for a phase in which literary activity moved towards greater organization and expansion.
From this experience, the idea of a literary institution crystallized, leading to the establishment of the "Medina Literary Club" in 1395 AH, which ushered literary activity into a broader institutional phase. The club opened its doors to poets, writers, and researchers, organizing evenings, lectures, and seminars, celebrating literary creativity and studies on its genres, while also caring for the sciences of Sharia, history, and related fields. It contributed to revitalizing the literary movement in the city, connecting its output to the literary scene in the Kingdom, and creating a platform for dialogue, critique, and communication among literary and intellectual figures.
Dialogue and Knowledge Councils
According to Al-Dubaisi, Medina witnessed the flourishing of scientific and literary salons established by some scholars, writers, and academics in their homes, transforming them into councils for dialogue and knowledge exchange, reading books, and discussing literary and historical issues. These salons drew their value from their social and scientific nature, extending the legacy of the old councils of Medina's scholars and representing a renewed image of the harmony between science, literature, and society.
In addition to this, libraries played a significant and impactful role in the flourishing cultural life, with the history of knowledge in the city being closely linked to books. Since before the Saudi era, Medina had private libraries for scholars and knowledgeable individuals, containing rare publications and original manuscripts in various sciences. A scholar's library in their home was an extension of their scientific council, a resource for their students, and a memory preserving what they acquired from books and writings.
Flourishing Libraries
The presence of libraries in public life expanded during the Saudi era, with the emergence of government and public libraries alongside private ones, and commercial libraries flourished in the area surrounding the Prophet's Mosque since the mid-14th century AH. They played a knowledge role that went beyond merely selling and circulating books, providing scholars, students, and readers with modern sources of knowledge, welcoming publications from various parts of the Arab world, and connecting the readers of Medina with the publishing, authorship, and translation movement.
The "King Abdulaziz Public Library" in Medina stands at the forefront of government libraries with historical significance, carrying a rich bibliographic and cultural legacy closely tied to the city's history, along with the libraries of the endowed scholars of Medina. Additionally, the "Library of the Prophet's Mosque" occupies a prominent place in the scientific scene, alongside the libraries of scholars, dignitaries, and writers. Collectively, these libraries formed a unique knowledge fabric, making books present in the details of cultural life, contributing to its dissemination, and supporting the literary and scientific movement, leading to Medina being known as the "City of Libraries."
Expanding Research Fields
Al-Dubaisi continues: With the expansion of education during the Saudi era, and the emergence of universities, colleges, and institutes, a solid scientific and research dimension was added to the cultural scene. Educational institutions graduated generations of specialists in Sharia, Arabic, and social sciences, and research fields expanded to include the history, heritage, urban development, society, and antiquities of the city through research and study centers dedicated to gathering sources, authenticating manuscripts, and preparing scientific studies. In this context, the Center for Research and Studies of Medina was established in 1418 AH as a specialized institution serving the history and heritage of the city, caring for its sources, landmarks, figures, and documents. It provided researchers with extensive scientific material about the city, linking historical knowledge with modern research methodologies, and contributing to preserving an important aspect of its scientific and urban memory.
The cultural scene gained a visual and artistic dimension with the emergence of the "Medina Visual Artists Group" in 1401 AH, the first group of its kind in our country, where its members gathered around the visual experience, its schools, and trends, conducting artistic activities that extended to other Saudi cities and Arab capitals. The artists drew some of their themes from the environment of the city, its landmarks, architecture, and heritage, making their works a testament to the connection between art and place, and expressing the presence of the city in the visual memory of its people.
All of this contributed to shaping the cultural scene in Medina over seven decades from interconnected sources, with the Prophet's Mosque being its primary source and original wellspring. From it branched out scientific and literary councils, cultural salons, the Blessed Valley Family, the Medina Literary Club, private, endowed, governmental, and commercial libraries, universities and their research centers, the Medina Visual Artists Group, and the Center for Research and Studies of Medina.
These sources preserved the city's connection to its scientific and literary heritage, expanded the fields of knowledge within it, and established a strong bridge between its rich heritage and modern institutions. Institutions, councils, libraries, and groups collaborated to shape a renewed cultural life that draws its roots from the history of the city, keeps pace with the transformations of the era, and grants culture its rightful place in the modern history of the city.
Thus, Medina, during these decades, became a space where the circles of knowledge and literary councils intertwined, where the treasures of books and research institutions met, and where the voices of poetry, thought, and art harmonized, in a natural extension of the legacy of the Prophet's Mosque, and in a civilizational image that affirms the continuity of the city's scientific and cultural contributions across generations.
