There are many titles that could be written about the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: about the major transformations it is witnessing, its economy, its projects, and its growing international presence. However, perhaps there is something in the region that deserves to be read from another perspective: the role that Saudi Arabia has chosen to play in its surroundings, and how it has maintained a remarkable level of composure in decision-making and stance amidst one of the most turbulent regional phases.
In years that have seen open wars, continuous escalation, and changes in alliances, the Saudi presence was not solely based on reactions.
From Operation Decisive Storm to the Mecca Agreement, and from the alliances it formed to protect its security to the dialogue and mediation paths it embraced, Saudi policy appears broader than being reduced to power or diplomacy. It knows when deterrence is a necessity, when politics becomes more effective, and when dialogue is a way to protect interests instead of leaving the region to the equations of confrontation.
This composure has become more evident in recent tensions, as with the war in Gaza, through the major transformations in Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, and Yemen, reaching the turmoil in the Red Sea and the risks of navigation in the Gulf, Riyadh has maintained its presence in major files, without making engagement in regional crises a permanent fate. It has pushed for de-escalation, hosted dialogue paths, and politically engaged in issues that transcend its borders, placing its Arab and international weight in the service of containing crises and opening spaces for solutions.
Lebanon, which holds a special place in this scene, from the Taif Agreement, which was one of the most prominent Saudi milestones in modern Lebanese history, to the current stance supporting Lebanon's sovereignty, its institutions, and its Arab relations, this country has remained present in the Saudi vision as a state that should regain its vitality and role, not as an additional arena for regional conflict.
In the recent phase, this stance has not remained confined to politics, as with the return of official communication and the Saudi move to support Lebanon, culminating in the resumption of Lebanese exports to the Kingdom, economic openness has seemed to be part of a broader path to rebuild trust between the two countries.
Today, this image seems worthy of attention: the Kingdom that possesses the tools of power but does not make them its only language, which expands its influence without abandoning the space for dialogue, and which views the stability of its surroundings as part of its security and role.
Perhaps this is one of the most expressive qualities of Saudi Arabia: the composure of a state that knows its weight and at the same time knows how to use that weight.
