The Al-Azhar strongly condemned and denounced the attempt to target Mecca - the Qibla of Muslims and the heart's desire of their souls - affirming that endangering the sacred city is a heinous crime, a sinful assault on a sanctity that God has honored, and a provocation to the feelings of Muslims in the east and west of the earth.
Al-Azhar emphasized in a statement today that it is unimaginable for Mecca to become a battleground or a threat, and that the sanctity of Mecca is one of the fundamental tenets of the Islamic faith that must not be violated or approached with malice.
It pointed out that the security of the Two Holy Mosques is not a political or regional issue, but rather a matter that affects the beliefs of the entire Islamic nation; targeting the sacred city or endangering it is an affront to the feelings of two billion Muslims and an attack on the sanctity of holy sites to which the hearts of Muslims turn in their prayers, to which they pilgrimage from every deep ravine, and around which they gather despite their different homelands, sects, languages, and colors.
Al-Azhar noted in its statement that preserving the sanctity of the sacred city and ensuring its security and the security of its visitors is a responsibility that must be respected by both Muslims and non-Muslims.
