The Jordanian army thwarted an infiltration attempt across the border by an armed group consisting of 14 individuals coming from Syrian territory, in the northern military zone.
A military source responsible in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces announced today (Saturday) that the group attempted to cross the border on (Friday) evening under heavy fire cover and engaged directly with border guard forces, which dealt with them according to the established rules of engagement.
He added that the Jordanian forces inflicted numerous casualties on the armed group, while the remaining members fled towards the Syrian interior, without disclosing their identities or the group they belong to.
This attempt comes amid increasing security challenges on Jordan's northern borders, which are witnessing repeated infiltration and smuggling attempts.
In May, the Jordanian army announced the execution of strikes targeting sites, factories, and warehouses used by arms and drug smuggling networks on the Syrian border, warning of the increasing smuggling operations and the evolution of their methods, including the use of drones and guided balloons. The army confirmed that it would deal firmly with any attempts that threaten the security and sovereignty of the kingdom.
On October 19 and 23, the army announced the thwarting of two separate infiltration attempts on the northern border and arrested the infiltrators.
In September, Jordanian forces thwarted four attempts to smuggle drugs using guided balloons, seizing nearly half a million narcotic pills.
