Specialists and legal experts have warned against disclosing bank account information to any party and urged everyone to refer to official and accredited websites and entities. They also cautioned that some elderly individuals are falling victim to financial scams through claims of investing their money in stocks or through requests to update their banking information by fraudsters who prey on their victims. "Okaz" has documented stories recounted by victims who lost their money due to excessive trust or negligence.
They deceived me into returning a doubled amount!
Uncle "Mohammed," 88 years old, is still living in shock after losing about 650,000 riyals from his bank account after falling victim to a financial scam by those claiming to invest bank balances in foreign stocks and speculations. He filed a report with the relevant authorities in an attempt to recover the money he lost due to trusting calls he received from unknown individuals, giving them access to the activation numbers for his bank accounts! Uncle Mohammed recounts to "Okaz" the details of what happened to him when he received a call from an Arab expatriate who offered to invest his money in stocks and promised to double it within a week. "Over two days, the scammer began withdrawing money from my account through transfers, and each time he asked me for a verification number that reached my phone. Unfortunately, I believed him, especially since he returned 20,000 riyals after the first withdrawal, which made me trust him and believe him." Uncle Mohammed adds: Within a few days, the money was withdrawn and transferred to two accounts, one of which was later found to belong to a person with disabilities in Tabuk, and the other to another person with disabilities in Jazan. As soon as the amounts entered the accounts, they were transferred outside Saudi Arabia. I learned this information later after I filed a report with the police. Uncle Mohammed summarizes what happened to him: I realized that I had made a grave mistake... I did not know the importance of keeping the secret numbers that come to my phone with any banking operation, and this lesson cost me dearly in terms of my money and health.
The prosecution confronts the fraudsters
Uncle Mohammed's story is similar to a previous incident that the prosecution monitored in its efforts to combat fraudsters and those who violate financial rights when the Financial Fraud Prosecution completed investigations with a criminal organization consisting of 11 Asian expatriates on charges of financial fraud. According to a previous statement from the prosecution, the investigation procedures revealed that the accused were engaged in financial fraud by sending text messages to victims, contacting them by phone, and misleading them into updating their banking information, thus obtaining their personal data and using it to access their accounts and seize their money. They were arrested and referred to the competent court, and with the presentation of evidence against them, a judgment was issued convicting them of the charges against them and sentencing them to the maximum penalty of 7 years each, and they will be deported from Saudi Arabia after serving their sentences. The Public Prosecution stated that it is committed to protecting funds from all forms of crime and will present anyone who dares to violate them to court to demand strict penalties in this regard.
"Abeer" from victim to accused
21-year-old Abeer is one of the victims of financial fraud, as she never imagined that the job application she submitted through social media platforms would lead her to investigations and accountability in a financial fraud crime she could not comprehend. Her experience and unjustified trust in social media allowed perpetrators who claimed to employ her with a salary of 6,000 riyals per month without effort or the need to attend work to deceive her. She provided them with her bank account number and verification codes that reached her phone with her first salary, only to later discover that her account was a station for receiving money from others, which was seized through fraud after the funds were deposited into her account. Later, she received a summons regarding charges of fraud from victims through bank transfers to her account.
Fishing with skill and precision
Abeer’s story shares similar names, but the common denominator is that a network of thieves skillfully preys on their victims, sometimes under the guise of investing money, stocks, real estate, and foreign shares, and at other times by advertising job requests in the online space, asking the job seeker to provide all their details and then luring the victim to open a bank account for salary deposits, followed by a bait with multiple scenarios that end with requests for the secret numbers sent to their mobile phone. The unsuspecting employee finds themselves a victim of fraud, and that their account has received large amounts that were transferred abroad without their knowledge, despite their repeated approval of the financial transactions reaching their phone due to ignorance, naivety, and negligence.
Do not disclose your information!
The Public Prosecution places great importance on protecting personal accounts, commercial activities, and the national economy from all forms of criminal practices and wrongful exploitation. Lawyer Nabil Malhan warned against disclosing bank account information to any party and urged referring to official and accredited websites and entities. He explained that fraudsters use multiple and renewed methods that often target the elderly and women in particular, as scammers provide victims with incorrect data update forms and ask them to provide their banking information under the pretext of updating information, requesting that they share their bank account secret numbers, and then fraudulently seize their money and balances.
Girls.. ignore unknown calls
Lawyer Bashayer Al-Azmah stated that practices that harm the money of others through fraud and theft fall under the scope of strict criminal accountability, and that victims are often the elderly or women. She mentioned that among the victims are teenage girls who are lured by offers of remote jobs with attractive salaries, and they are asked to open a bank account and hand it over to the fraudulent entity. Lawyer Bashayer warned against dealing with any unknown calls from phone numbers not issued by the bank, as a bank employee cannot ask a client for their secret number or activation code. She confirmed that sometimes it is easy for perpetrators to seize the victim's money and steal it due to misplaced trust in strangers.
Do not neglect the verification code
Lawyer Saad Masfer Al-Maliki warned against dealing with messages that occasionally arrive on the phone claiming to close the bank account and requesting the client's information to update data and control their accounts. He stated that financial fraud has multiple and changing forms and methods targeting individuals in society, and it is a crime that warrants detention, involving both public and private rights. The prosecution moves in public rights before the criminal court. Al-Maliki emphasized that every citizen and resident must preserve their bank accounts and the verification codes that reach their mobile phones so that they do not become victims of their own negligence.
Fraud has many faces
Lawyer Siraj Serti discussed the evolution of financial fraud from trading activities in the foreign exchange market to advertising job vacancies for teenagers to exploit them after taking control of their bank accounts. Financial fraud has many and changing forms targeting individuals in society, and it is a crime that warrants detention, involving both public and private rights. The prosecution moves in public rights before the criminal court. Lawyer Manal Al-Harthi alerted everyone not to disclose their bank account information to any party and to refer to official websites and accredited entities, as those who commit fraud use multiple and renewed methods, often utilizing social media platforms and email, and frequently target the elderly and women in particular after providing the victim with investment models and misleading them into believing that the investment is licensed and legitimate, yielding them periodic profits.
The victim is a perpetrator
Lawyer Nawal Al-Dosari stated that some fraudsters use multiple and renewed methods, often utilizing social media platforms, and frequently target the elderly and women in particular, asking their victims to open an account in one of the local banks. Then, money is received in the account from other victims, after which they seize the funds and transfer them abroad. The victim, as the account holder, is held responsible before the relevant authorities for using their account in criminal activities and facilitating this. Lawyer Hukm Al-Hakami called for caution against forms of fraud, stating that in such incidents, the supposed victim may be treated as an accused before the prosecution due to their negligence in preserving their bank accounts and the verification codes that reach their mobile phones, thus becoming an accused under the law. This means that the victim becomes a perpetrator against themselves and against others whose money was stolen and transferred through their account abroad, even if unintentionally, due to their negligence and carelessness. He stated that the crime is intertwined between fraud and financial fraud, which results in illicit funds leading to money laundering crimes.
Do not deal with them.. report them
Lawyer Abeer Dughreidi added that practices that harm the money of others through fraud and theft fall under the scope of strict criminal accountability. She warned against engaging in unregulated financial investments that facilitate the seizure and theft of funds by perpetrators. She said, "Promotional advertisements on social media regarding requests for investment in currencies, stocks, real estate, gold, and others, whether inside or outside the Kingdom, are deceptive and fraudulent, requiring reporting these individuals and not dealing with them."
