In a scene reminiscent of the jungle law films, the fields of the Sidi Kacem region in Morocco turned into a stage for a particular form of vigilante justice, after a group of farmers decided not only to apprehend a thief attempting to steal their crops but also to tie him with ropes to a tree trunk and subject him to the most horrific forms of violence and humiliation, documenting his crime through the lenses of their phones.
The threads of the case exploded when social media users circulated a shocking video that stunned Moroccan public opinion, showing a person bound with a rope around a tree, while individuals beat him, tortured him, and threatened him, in an attempt to take justice into their own hands, away from state institutions and their established legal channels.
However, the winds of revenge did not blow as the farmers had hoped. While initial investigations proved that the victim was indeed involved in stealing crops that had not yet been harvested and had a previous court ruling against him, the Sidi Kacem court acted decisively to confront the chaos, directing the judicial center of the royal gendarmerie to open an urgent investigation that does not recognize street law.
The investigations resulted in the arrest of three individuals involved in torturing and defaming the thief, and all were referred to the judiciary on several charges including unlawful detention, intentional harm, violence, and broadcasting and distributing images of a person with the intent to defame. Some were placed in jail while others were released on bail, confirming that committing a crime in response to a crime only leads to imprisonment.
