The mediators in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations received Hamas's response to the latest proposal, but the response has not been satisfactory so far, according to a knowledgeable source.
The source stated that the mediators are demanding Hamas to introduce a set of improvements for its response to be positive, allowing negotiations to continue, as reported by Yedioth Ahronoth. It was noted that Israeli officials described Hamas's response as disappointing, emphasizing that if there is a significant improvement in the response, it would be possible to move forward in the negotiation process.
Palestinian sources revealed that Hamas's response included comments on the aid mechanism, withdrawal, and guarantees to stop the war. The sources confirmed that Hamas agreed to the Gaza agreement proposal, and the decision is now in Israel's hands.
According to the newspaper, the main point of contention lies in the withdrawal lines that Israel will adhere to, with the gap narrowing to several hundred meters. It mentioned that Israel is willing to withdraw approximately 1000 to 1200 meters from the Philadelphi route, while Hamas is demanding 800 meters. Channel 12 reported that Israel is demanding a depth of no less than 1200 meters, while Hamas only wants a depth of 800 meters.
The newspaper stated that Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and the United States are awaiting Hamas's response to the latest proposal for the hostage deal and ceasefire in Gaza. Another point of contention revealed is the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released under the agreement.
It clarified that the Israeli proposal is to release 125 life-sentenced prisoners and more than 1100 detainees imprisoned after October 7. The newspaper anticipated that Hamas would push for the release of more long-term prisoners, and it is believed that the gap in demands ranges between 100 and 150 detainees. Israeli officials see the issue as solvable and consider the arrival of U.S. envoy Steve Wietkoff in the Middle East a key sign of progress. It confirmed that if negotiations advance, Wietkoff is expected to travel to Doha to work on formalizing the agreement. Channel 12 revealed that a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in Rome, involving Wietkoff, Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, and a Qatari official.
The Israeli site "Walla" quoted a diplomatic source warning against hasty reports of an imminent breakthrough in the hostage agreement and ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.
According to the political source, there is cautious optimism primarily stemming from the mood of the mediators, rather than from strong data on the ground.
According to the source, it seems that the mediators, who have not yet conveyed Hamas's official response to Israel regarding the updated proposal, have already received the movement's position from its representatives in Doha. However, they are not in a hurry to convey it to the Israeli team, in an attempt to improve the response to prevent further deadlock in the process. He said that the answer Israel receives could be similar to "yes, but," adding that the mediators' representatives have spoken with Hamas in recent hours in an attempt to make the response more precise and perhaps even improve the wording of the response to serve as a real basis for progress.
