The oil markets are anticipating today’s meeting of the "OPEC+" alliance, with expectations that discussions will focus on market developments and supply and demand outlooks. Earlier, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated that "OPEC+" ministers will discuss market conditions and the extent of compliance with current production agreements during the meeting.
Price Movements
In terms of oil price movements, last week saw strong gains, with renewed military confrontations between the United States and Iran and ongoing disruptions to supply flows across the Middle East. Throughout the week, Brent crude rose by 7.6%, while U.S. crude increased by about 10%, as supply routes in the Middle East continued to be affected by the war. The gains came amid ongoing disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, where only four vessels crossed (on Thursday) compared to an average of about 15 vessels over the past ten days.
Sharper Increases
The rise in oil prices, coupled with a sharper increase in fuel prices, has pushed inflation rates and government borrowing costs up around the world, along with increasing warnings that the global economy may slow down unless some relief is achieved. ANZ analysts raised their short-term forecast for Brent crude prices to $95 per barrel, with risks pushing prices higher if the conflict in the Middle East escalates.
New Supplies
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Piesen predicted that oil prices would fall to between $40 and $50 per barrel after the war with Iran ends, suggesting that the market would then face a significant surplus with new supplies coming in. In the United States, the average price of diesel reached a record high of $5.85 per gallon, driven by the repercussions of the Iranian war, Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, and declining inventories, which increases inflationary pressures and raises concerns about global growth. Gasoline prices are among the key economic indicators for American consumers and can quickly shape their perceptions of the economy as a whole.
