Europe is facing increasing pressure to secure its gas needs before winter, with expectations that gas prices will need to rise above $117 "100 euros" per megawatt-hour in December, in order for the continent to rebuild its inventories to levels sufficient to meet winter demand, according to estimates from Goldman Sachs.
Highest Level
The bank explained that the rise in Dutch futures prices, the European gas benchmark, to over $76 "65 euros" per megawatt-hour last week, the highest level in five months, may not be enough to attract additional quantities of liquefied natural gas to Europe at the expense of Asian markets. According to Goldman Sachs, gas inventories in Northwest Europe may end August at around 51% of storage capacity, as European countries race to increase inventories before demand rises during winter.
Opening of "Hormuz"
Gas futures prices in Europe and Britain have increased by more than 10% during the past two weeks, when Iran announced that the United States must lift the sanctions imposed on it, pay compensation, and fulfill a number of other conditions before reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Dutch gas futures prices - the European benchmark - for delivery in September rose by 10.62% to 61.445 euros ($70.98) per megawatt-hour. Meanwhile, British gas futures surged by 10.98% to about £51.48 ($69.60) per megawatt-hour.
