Andrew Naylor, Head of the Middle East and Public Policy at the World Gold Council, confirmed that markets are heavily focused on the trajectory of U.S. monetary policy; due to the direct impact of interest rates on gold, however, strong demand from central banks still remains one of the key factors supporting gold prices until the end of the year.
Naylor explained in an interview with “Al Arabiya Business” that the rise in gold prices following the Federal Reserve's decision, despite its hawkish tone and increased expectations for interest rate hikes in September, reflects that gold movements do not depend on a single factor, but are influenced by a wide range of economic and geopolitical variables.
Inflation Concerns
He noted that geopolitical tensions have raised oil prices, which has heightened concerns about a return of inflationary pressures, creating a downward pressure on gold; however, he also affirmed that gold still retains its role as a safe haven in times of uncertainty.
He pointed out that the experience of the global financial crisis in 2008 and 2009 showed that gold may decline at the onset of crises due to investors resorting to selling the most liquid assets, but it has proven its ability to maintain its value in the long term as one of the most important hedging tools.
Regarding the reduction of some global banks' forecasts for gold prices by the end of the year, Naylor stated that high interest rates represent one of the most significant pressures on gold; however, developments in demand from China and India, which are among the largest consumers of gold in the world, will remain a key factor in determining price trends in the coming period.
He clarified that demand for gold bars and coins remains resilient due to high prices, supported by investors' expectations of continued attractiveness of gold.
Diversifying Investments
Regarding building investment portfolios, Naylor emphasized the importance of diversifying investments and not focusing on a single asset. He noted that gold has different characteristics compared to other asset classes, as its prices are influenced by multiple factors, including central bank purchases, investment demand, and actual demand for the metal, making it an important element in diversified investment portfolios.
A report on gold demand trends for the second quarter of this year issued by the World Gold Council indicated that total gold demand stabilized at 1269 tons compared to the same period last year, coinciding with a decline in gold prices from their record levels recorded at the beginning of 2026.
