The global markets are anticipating this week’s meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve, where investors face a decision that is difficult to predict: Will the Fed raise interest rates to combat inflation risks, or will it choose to wait after the latest data showed a calm in price pressures?
Energy Surge
According to the Wall Street Journal and what was reported by Al Arabiya, officials at the previous meeting were almost evenly divided; one team believes that raising interest rates may become necessary during the year, while another team thinks that the current policy is sufficient.
According to the newspaper, the decision has become more complicated, as any new wave of rising energy prices could make overall inflation more stubborn, while core inflation remains at 2.6%, which is above the Fed's target of 2%.
Recalculating
According to what was published by Al Arabiya, markets have begun to recalculate, with expectations for an interest rate hike at the meeting on July 28 and 29 rising to about 40%, compared to only about 10% just days ago. However, these figures do not capture all the uncertainty, as there is another factor: the new Fed Chair, Kevin Warsh, who speaks firmly about the need to restore price stability, has not yet clarified whether he believes that this requires an immediate rate hike or waiting. This is what makes Wednesday’s meeting different; raising interest rates would send a clear message that the Fed is ready to act quickly in the face of any new threat to inflation, while holding rates steady would not end the debate but might simply postpone it until next September.
