UN agencies reported in a report that global hunger rates declined for the third consecutive year in 2025, but the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the phenomenon of "El Niño" pose threats that could hinder this improvement in the coming years.
According to the report issued by UN agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the number of people suffering from hunger worldwide reached approximately 645 million in 2025, representing 7.8% of the global population.
Improvement in Food Security
This represents a decrease of 2.15% from the 2024 level of 658.8 million people, amid continued improvements in food security levels in Asia, along with a decline in the percentage of those affected by hunger in Africa, thus halting the continuous rise that the continent had experienced for a long time.
Despite this progress, UN agencies warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could lead to a decline in global food supplies due to rising energy prices, decreased availability of fertilizers, and increased transportation costs, which would impact food supply chains.
