عمّت حالة من الصدمة والاستياء أرجاء الهند، في الوقت الذي تستوعب الشركات وصانعو السياسات والمواطنون تصريحات الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، ورسومه الجمركية المفاجئة البالغة 25% التي فُرضت على نيودلهي، أخيراً.
بينما كان مسؤولو الحكومة الهندية يدرسون الرد، وتحصر مجموعات الأعمال تكلفة العوائق التجارية، اشتعلت الحسابات المحلية على مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي باحتجاجات المستخدمين على تعليقات ترمب، وانتقاد رئيس الوزراء الهندي ناريندرا مودي لعدم تحدثه بصراحة.
وبدأ الأمر عندما قال ترمب: «الحواجز التجارية التي تفرضها الهند هي الأكثر صرامةً وإزعاجاً»، في منشور على موقع «تروث سوشال» أخيراً. وأضاف: «الولايات المتحدة قد تفرض أيضاً عقوبات على نيودلهي لشرائها الأسلحة والطاقة من روسيا».
وفي ظل غياب اتفاق تجاري وشيك، دخلت الرسوم الجمركية البالغة 25% على الهند حيز التنفيذ.
وقال نائب الرئيس المساعد في «تشويس ويلث» للخدمات المالية أكشات جارج، التي تتخذ مقراً في مومباي: «بين عشية وضحاها، تحولت معادلة التجارة بين الولايات المتحدة والهند من متوترة إلى مضطربة». وأضاف: «الرسوم الجمركية لا تبدو سياسة منظمة بقدر ما تبدو رسالة سياسية صريحة».

Akshat Garg, assistant vice president at "Choice Wealth" financial services based in Mumbai, said, "Overnight, the trade equation between the U.S. and India shifted from tense to troubled." He added, "The tariffs do not seem like a structured policy as much as they appear to be a clear political message."
