The intensity of the disagreement between the former president of Zamalek Club, Mortada Mansour, and the Egyptian actress Elham Shahin has escalated, following a series of criticisms and statements that sparked widespread interaction on social media. This new confrontation has reignited the debate over the limits of freedom of expression and the manner of handling differing opinions within the Egyptian artistic and media circles.
The details of the crisis began during Elham Shahin's participation on Sunday evening in the events of the eleventh edition of the Sharm El-Sheikh International Festival for Youth Theatre, named after the artist Suhair El-Murshidi, where she attended as the honorary president of the festival.
During media statements on the sidelines of the festival, Shahin criticized what she described as the portrayal of citizens in the streets and the dissemination of their videos across social media platforms, in a remark understood to relate to Mortada Mansour. She expressed her rejection of using these platforms in a way that infringes on individuals' privacy or stirs controversy about them.
She also criticized the approach of some figures in dealing with journalists and media personnel, pointing to instances that included inappropriate responses to journalistic questions, saying: "I was surprised to see people gathering journalists in the street and responding to their questions with inappropriate phrases like 'Go ask your mother,'" while simultaneously warning against what she described as funded accounts and electronic committees aimed at harming art and artists and tarnishing Egypt's cultural image.
Mortada Mansour responds with statements and new escalation
In response, Mortada Mansour did not delay in directing sharp criticisms towards actress Elham Shahin, speaking about possessing information and details related to her, and referring to previous situations that stirred controversy around her.
Mansour said in his response: "Leave me alone, Elham, I know everything about you," a phrase that sparked widespread interaction among followers, especially as the verbal exchanges between the two parties intensified.
The matter did not stop at media statements, as the former president of Zamalek published a post on his Facebook page, announcing his intention to confront Shahin and those he described as her supporting parties on November 5, in front of a hotel in Cairo.
The post included offensive and personal phrases, along with a reference to a potential meeting at the mentioned time and place, saying: "Wait for me, you and those behind you, on November 5 in front of the Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel."
