I started winning awards early; since my youth, I won a first prize at the first conference for young writers in Zagazig in 1969, and Dr. Mufeed Shehab handed me the certificate of appreciation, while Said Hijab wrote about me in the magazine (Youth).
After a year following the outbreak of the October War, I submitted my first story (In the Beginning, It Was Good) and won first place. While I was living in Damietta, 180 kilometers away, I was summoned to Cairo, where I had several television interviews, and Nadia Saleh conducted an episode with me for the famous program (On the Corner) during the suspension of Amal Fahmy.
Dr. Doria Sharaf El-Din also interviewed Munir Amer in the program (Under Twenty), and I was just starting out at that time.
In 1986, my novel (Men and Shards) won the Armed Forces Award, which excited Gamal Al-Ghitani, and it was published in the (War Literature) series.
This means that national awards have a significant impact in attracting media attention to you, regardless of your geographical location. I remember that in the same year, we won first prizes in poetry, story, and theater (Samir Al-Fil, Taj El-Din Mohamed, and Abdel Daim Al-Shazly), and we found ourselves in Tahrir Square, under the open sky because we didn’t have money to travel to our distant cities.
I believe it is natural for publishers to seek your manuscripts after winning national awards. This happened to me in 2016 when my short story collection (Mountain of Narcissus) won, and the same thing happened more intensely after my short story collection (Bus Line 77) won the Sawiris Award for Senior Writers in 2020. A group of intellectuals attended our ceremony, including Dr. Mohamed Abu Al-Ghar.
The same thing happened more clearly when my collection (Sad Dolls) won the Al-Multaqa Award for Arabic Short Stories, which led me to visit Kuwait, Doha, and Amman. I delivered a lecture in the Jordanian capital about my experience in the art of storytelling with my friends Khaled Al-Youssef and Taleb Al-Rifai.
In general: winning national or Arab awards serves as a golden gateway to introduce the writer and their work.
