In a legal development that reignites one of the most controversial cases in the artistic community, the defense team of Moroccan artist Saad Lamjarred has officially announced its intention to appeal to the Court of Cassation against the ruling issued against him. This decision comes in light of the ruling by the judges of the Court of Appeal in France, which sentenced him to ten years in prison with an immediate custody order, in the case involving French woman Laura Prioul, following events dating back to 2016 in a hotel in the French capital, Paris.
Through lawyer Wadi Hamamouchi, one of the defense team members, the client’s shock was expressed, describing the decision as "completely incomprehensible." The defense explained that the judicial administration ignored substantial new evidence presented during the trial sessions, most notably the file of financial extortion that the French judiciary condemned individuals from the complainant's circle, including her mother, for demands amounting to three million euros in exchange for her withdrawal or absence from the sessions.
The defense also highlighted old documents dating back to 2017 that included proposals for an amicable settlement, which the legal team considers a blow to the consistency and stability of the complainant's narrative, who has consistently denied any material motives throughout the litigation process.
In the details of the technical defense, the team pointed out clear contradictions in the genetic evidence, as the direct medical examinations and the genital organs showed no traces of the Moroccan artist's DNA concerning the three accusations directed at him, while his DNA was only found on the underwear. The defense criticized the conditions under which this evidence was collected and preserved, noting that the complainant kept the clothing for several hours before handing it over to the police, which opens the door to possibilities of contamination and loss of forensic reliability.
While the 41-year-old artist insists on his absolute innocence, affirming the consistency of his statements from the beginning, the defense team faces a challenging journey in the appeal stage to overturn the recent ruling, amid difficult psychological and health conditions the Moroccan artist is experiencing in his detention in France.
