The case of Moroccan artist Saad Lamjarred is back in the spotlight with the start of his appeal trial sessions at the Court of Appeal in France next Thursday, following the 2023 ruling against him of six years in prison for rape.
The appeal sessions will continue until September 25 in Créteil near Paris, after being postponed previously to complete the investigations.
Lamjarred, who is 41 years old, will appear before the court while on conditional release, with expectations leaning towards the possibility of upholding the sentence; according to David Shimi, the lawyer for Laura B., who stated that the case file "contains complete evidence proving the occurrence of the assault," unless exceptional developments arise that change the course of the trial.
The lawyer pointed out that his client has lived through "ten years of psychological pressure and turmoil," considering that the continuation of the sessions brings back the effects of the experience that she claims has completely destroyed her.
The Paris Criminal Court had convicted Lamjarred of raping and assaulting young woman Laura B. inside one of the capital's hotels in 2016, after they met at a nightclub. Despite the Moroccan artist's insistence on his innocence and his denial of having any relationship with her, he admitted that he pushed her violently because she scratched him during their kiss exchange, according to his statements before the court.
The appeal sessions coincide with another case in which Lamjarred was sentenced to five years in prison for raping a young woman in 2018 near Saint-Tropez, a ruling he has also appealed. He has previously faced similar accusations in Morocco in 2015 and in the United States in 2010.
With multiple legal files, all eyes are on whether the new appeal sessions will bring a shift in the case's trajectory, or if they will reinforce the conviction that has been following the artist for years.
