وجاءت وفاة جونسون داخل منزله في حي غراناتا هيلز بمدينة لوس أنجلوس الأمريكية، قبل أيام من موعد احتفاله بعيد ميلاده الخامس والتسعين، لينتهي فصل طويل من العطاء الفني لعازف ارتبط اسمه بواحدة من أشهر المقطوعات الموسيقية في تاريخ السينما العالمية.

وُلد بلاس جونسون في مدينة دونالدسونفيل بولاية لويزيانا، واشتهر بأدائه المنفرد في موسيقى فيلم «النمر الوردي»، التي سجلها في 1963 بالتعاون مع الملحن الراحل هنري مانشيني.
ووفقاً لصحيفة «الغارديان»، حصدت الموسيقى التصويرية للفيلم ثلاث جوائز «غرامي»، كما رُشحت لجائزة «الأوسكار»، واحتلت المرتبة العشرين ضمن قائمة المعهد الأمريكي للأفلام لأعظم الموسيقى التصويرية على الإطلاق. وبدأ جونسون مشواره الموسيقي متأثراً بالأجواء الفنية في عائلته، قبل أن ينتقل إلى مدينة لوس أنجلوس في 1954، إذ أصبح لاحقاً واحداً من أبرز عازفي التسجيلات في استوديوهات الموسيقى الأمريكية.
