أعلن النجم الأمريكي مايكل دوغلاس، نيته التوقف عن التمثيل بعد مسيرة فنية حافلة امتدت لنحو 6 عقود.
وقال دوغلاس خلال مشاركته في مهرجان كارلوفي فاري السينمائي الدولي بجمهورية التشيك «ليس لدي «نوايا حقيقية» للعودة إلى التمثيل، لم أعمل منذ 2022 بشكل متعمد لأنني أدركت أنه يجب علي التوقف»، مشيراً إلى رغبته في الاستمتاع بوقت فراغه بعد سنوات طويلة من العمل الدؤوب. وجاء ذلك بعد قضائه فترة استرخاء مع ابنته كاريز (22 عاماً) في جزيرة مينوركا الإسبانية.
وأضاف دوغلاس الفائز بجائزتي أوسكار: «لا أريد أن أكون من أولئك الممثلين الذين يموتون فجأة أثناء العمل في موقع التصوير»، معبراً عن رضاه عن قراره بالابتعاد عن الأضواء. إلا أنه استدرك قائلاً إنه لا يعتبر نفسه متقاعداً رسمياً، إذ إنه قد يعود للتمثيل إذا ما عرض عليه دور استثنائي يستحق العناء.
وعن حياته الحالية، أبدى دوغلاس سعادته بأداء دور الزوج المخلص لزوجته النجمة كاثرين زيتا جونز التي ارتبط بها قبل 25 عاماً، إذ قال بمزحة: «أنا سعيد الآن بأداء دور الزوج في إطار الحفاظ على زواج ناجح».
واشتهر دوغلاس عالمياً بأدائه البارز لدور المالي الجشع جوردون جيكو في فيلم «وول ستريت» (1987) الذي نال عنه جائزة الأوسكار.
American star Michael Douglas announced his intention to stop acting after a prolific career that spanned nearly six decades.
Douglas said during his participation in the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, "I don't have any 'real intentions' to return to acting. I haven't worked since 2022 deliberately because I realized I need to stop," referring to his desire to enjoy his free time after many years of hard work. This came after he spent a relaxing period with his daughter Carys (22 years old) on the Spanish island of Menorca.
Douglas, a two-time Oscar winner, added, "I don't want to be one of those actors who suddenly dies while working on set," expressing his satisfaction with his decision to step away from the spotlight. However, he noted that he doesn't consider himself officially retired, as he might return to acting if offered an exceptional role that is worth the effort.
Regarding his current life, Douglas expressed happiness in playing the role of a devoted husband to his wife, star Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he has been with for 25 years, jokingly saying, "I am happy now playing the role of a husband in maintaining a successful marriage."
Douglas is globally renowned for his outstanding performance as the greedy financier Gordon Gekko in the film "Wall Street" (1987), for which he won an Oscar.
