The woman has always been and continues to be the focal point of every home that aspires to greatness and completeness, and of every nation that hopes for glory and prosperity. The woman is not, as some claim, merely half of society; those who describe her as such believe they are granting her status and dignity. In reality, the woman embodies the entirety of society alongside man, without division or fragmentation. The woman is a school; if you prepare her, you prepare a good nation.
Throughout all eras, she has been the cornerstone of every great event, the inspiration behind significant speeches, and from her ranks emerge every gallant knight and every brave hero. From her gateway, flags are carried by knights, and from her school emerge educators and reformers. She is more capable of understanding the signals of life and the signs of things, possessing an intuition that is infallible and a keen insight that surpasses the abilities and minds of men. She understands implicit language far better than men do, many times over! Who can forget the mothers of great imams, the mothers of great inventors, and even the wives of prominent scholars? The famous saying "Behind every great man is a woman" did not come from nowhere; behind every successful home is a woman, and behind every thriving society is a woman.
In Arab society, even during its pre-Islamic period—despite some shortcomings—women received significant attention and respect. Who can forget Al-Khansa, Tamadur bint Amr ibn al-Sharid, who stood reciting poetry in the Souk of Ukaz and was judged by Al-A'sha to be the most eloquent in the market? When Islam came, it elevated the status of women, honored them, granted them their full rights, and made them precious gems, protected and revered. Even regarding the misconception that a woman's testimony is half that of a man, this was a form of utmost honor if the speakers understood it correctly. The stipulation that her testimony is half that of a man serves as a subtle indication of her protection from appearing before judicial bodies; testimony is only required in disputes, and Islam intended to spare her from being embroiled in conflicts or hostilities, preserving her deep emotions and protecting her dignity from being demeaned in court. Even in inheritance, it is not accurate to say that a woman receives half of what a man does; studies have indicated the existence of more than thirty cases in which a woman inherits equally to a man or even more, or where she inherits while her male counterpart does not. Conversely, the cases in which a woman inherits half of what a man does are limited to four specific situations governed by criteria of kinship, generation, and financial burden. Inheritance in Islam is not determined by gender but by other factors outlined in jurisprudential texts.
She is also a symbol of life in all its meanings; life is a woman, and the world is a woman. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was symbolically called to the world during the Night Journey by a beautiful woman who called to him, but he did not turn to her, and Gabriel told him that this world had been adorned for him...
What is said about disparaging her in Arabic poetry or trivializing her is unfounded; poets and artists have taken her as a symbol for many of their meanings and philosophies. Freedom is a woman, beauty is a woman, pride is a woman, the homeland is a woman, and great aspirations are women... A woman, my son, whom the heart loves, is the world.
What some perceive as her being an evil symbol of temptation, cunning, and challenge, as well as misguidance and deceit, comes from the eyes of those modernists cloaked in values far removed from Arab ethics, which regard women with reverence and respect.
Those who do not understand the symbolism of women in the eyes of artists and poets may find themselves lost in thought and misunderstanding. The woman and her discourse in the poetry of poets are more of a symbol than a mere woman in reality. When a poet resorts to the sensual description of a woman, he does not intend those sensory meanings as much as he signifies philosophical concepts. The sensual description of a woman's femininity and charms is a world of symbols; those who remain at the level of its sensory concept may not have delved deeply into the profound seas of poetry, where the woman represents a vast universe and where the map of her body and its contours carry great meanings. This is a poetic matter we do not wish to delve into, although we may address it in a future article. Thus, it is unjust to judge or evaluate a poet's work by someone who cannot decipher its symbols and mysteries, and this applies to all literary works. The woman will remain, in every era, a symbol whose significance serves as a scale and measure through which we understand the depth of ideas, the sophistication of perspectives, and the elevation of education. The presence of women in poetry and media indicates their importance, not their degradation.
