The unification of the Kingdom was not just a political line on the map; it was a promise that distance would become a bridge, not a barrier. The road is a translation of unity. From an initial network of just a few kilometers to a network exceeding 73,000 kilometers, the roads tell the story of a nation that made connectivity a permanent national project.
During the era of the founder, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud - may God rest his soul - connecting the regions was a condition for a state that had been re-unified. The Ministry of Transportation was established in 1372 AH/1953 AD to oversee roads, railways, and ports. Then, in 1395 AH/1975 AD, an organization was created to assign it the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads and bridges. Thus, the Kingdom transitioned from carving paths to building an integrated national network.
In the prosperous era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and with the support and guidance of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the story of the road has moved to a more complex phase: governance, measurement, user experience, and sustainability. The Road Sector Program, derived from the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, has become a program with initiatives focused on quality, safety, traffic density, governance, sustainability, and capabilities. It promises not only a more beautiful road but also a system that knows what it has, what needs maintenance, when to intervene, and how to spend efficiently.
The essential difference today is that the road is no longer inspected by the naked eye alone, nor is its maintenance programmed only after the problem becomes visible to everyone. The Roads Authority now possesses a fleet of surveying and assessment equipment supported by artificial intelligence, described as the largest in the world. It includes more than 18 advanced devices that scan surface damage, measure skid resistance, roughness, thickness, and layer deviation, while drones reach ferries and hard-to-access locations to conduct thermal surveys. Thus, maintenance shifts from a delayed reaction to a more precise and faster proactive decision.
The available figures illuminate a part of this transformation, provided they are read in their correct context. The road infrastructure quality index reached 5.7 in the World Economic Forum's data for 2024, placing the Kingdom fourth globally among G20 countries; official sources also confirm the Kingdom's leadership in the road connectivity index. In terms of safety, the road traffic death rate decreased by 60% in 2025 compared to 2016, according to the report from the Ministerial Committee for Traffic Safety, and 81% of roads now comply with the highest safety standards, enhancing traffic safety levels on the Kingdom's roads.
Here, the meaning of the road expands from infrastructure to development. It connects the pilgrim and the Umrah performer to a safer arrival experience, the tourist to a closer destination, the factory and warehouse to the port and airport, and the mining area to supply chains and markets. The National Transport and Logistics Strategy works to improve the connectivity of trade and transport networks locally, regionally, and internationally, and to develop logistics centers and empower local industries, in a way that confirms that the efficiency of the modern economy does not stop at the port gate or the airport runway, but also begins from the road that connects them.
This function is clearly evident in the Gulf dimension, through the role of the Dhahran–Al Uqair–Salwa road in supporting connectivity with Qatar and the UAE and serving industrial cities and border crossings, alongside the role of the Saudi–Oman road in facilitating truck movement across the Empty Quarter. These are specific examples that show that the road is no longer just an internal line; it has become part of the Kingdom's position among the continents and its ability to transform geography into a logistical and economic advantage.
On National Day, we celebrate a road that began with the steps of establishment, expanded through decades of development, and today derives its intelligence from data before it charts its decisions on the ground. Between the memory of stone and lime and the ambition of 2030, the Kingdom confidently moves forward: every paved road is a stronger connection between its people and their opportunities, and every safe path is a new witness to a homeland that does not settle for reaching the future but paves the way for it.
