In recent years, there has been progress in medical research to understand the nature and treatment methods for "breast cancer." Treatment has not been limited to chemotherapy or surgery; rather, more precise and effective means have emerged that cater to the needs of each patient based on her specific condition. The treatment is determined based on the nature of the tumor, genetic factors, and the patient's health status. All these developments have helped make the treatment journey shorter and less painful, increasing the healing rates and reducing the chances of the disease returning.
In addition to medical treatment, the patient undergoes a difficult psychological and social experience that may be harsher than the treatment itself. Here, the role of the social worker comes into play as a fundamental element of the care team, providing psychological, human, and community support. This is particularly important as they listen to the patient, reassure her, and accompany her during moments of weakness, helping her regain her psychological and social balance, understand the nature of her illness in a simplified manner, guide her on how to deal with the treatment and its effects, and coordinate with doctors and nursing staff to achieve the best possible care.
The role of the social worker does not stop there; it extends to supporting family members, especially children and the spouse, and assisting with administrative matters such as obtaining sick leave, financial support, or even arranging with charitable organizations if needed.
The success of breast cancer treatment does not rely solely on medications and techniques but on the integration of efforts between early detection, medicine, and psychological and social support. A patient who finds someone who understands her and stands by her psychologically can overcome many obstacles and gain greater strength to face the illness. Therefore, the social worker is considered part of the comprehensive treatment system that targets the individual in all its dimensions.
